Well, my first impression is: how much do you pay these reviewers? They need to do a better job on the basic facts, for example:
* The Accent's competitors do NOT offer the same equipment as on the Accent SE, at least for anywhere near the price of the Accent SE. For example: the base Fit doesn't offer features like 16" alloys, rear spoiler, fog lamps, heated mirrors, driver's seat height adjuster, driver's arm rest, dead pedal, leather wrapped wheel and shifter, lighted vanity mirrors, and full gauges. Yaris doesn't offer 16" alloys, heated mirrors, driver's arm rest and height adjuster, leather wrapped wheel and shifter, lighted vanity mirrors, full gauges (not even a tach). And so on. And side bags and ABS are optional on the Yaris.

* The Accent does not "one up them all" by offering side bags/curtains standard. The Fit and Versa come with side bags/curtains. But only the Fit and Accent come with ABS stnadard, in this class.

Otherwise I think the review was pretty good, if sparse. Hopefully Edmunds will do a full review sometime soon.

Favorite quotes:

"The Accent stayed tightly screwed together during our hundreds of miles, and even the rough roads of Detroit couldn't elicit a rattle or shake lose any trim."

Is this the HIGHEST standard we can hold a $14K+ car to these days? The fact that it didn't completely fall apart in a few miles is means enough for celebration? Lovely.

"But the Accent is so loud at 80 mph, you simply won't want to drive it that fast."

Sounds like a well screwed together automobile.

This should be reason enough to disqualify sales of this car in CA, NY, FL, and any other state where the traffic moves along at 80+ MPH.

Thank goodness I live in MN! I would never even think of driving a car that fast here, unless someone in the car was really ill and we needed to get to a hospital--and then I don't care how loud the engine is! Anyway, engine noise from a 1.6L motor at 80 mph isn't a testament to how well screwed together the car is. For example, I think the Fit is very well screwed together and its engine noise at 80 mph-style rpms was quite loud. If you want a lot less engine noise, there's the automatic Accent--lots less rpms on the highway.

I think it is high praise when after driving around Detroit--which I have done, and those are some nasty roads (sorry Detroiters) and not having a single rattle. In comparison, when I test drove cars such as a $24k Accord, a Fit, and a Sentra, I heard at least one rattle from each--and that was on relatively smooth roads.

Loved the review and agreed with most of it. The Accent is an exceptional small car and shows how Hyundai is rapidly improving.

However, why the harsh words about the Justy? I love my 1987 Justy and will take it to the grave with me. Sure, it is spartan, but it doesn't ever squeak, break-down, and is built like a tank. Considering the car was a mere $6000 brand new and is now 19 years old, it doesn't deserve the bad wrap. Wonder how well the $14K Accent will hold together by 2026?

For 2007, I thought that the Accent DOESN'T have ABS standard. And why doesn't this "class" include the Scion xA/xB (although admittedly, they have less than a month left of production), with replacements debuting early 2007.

The Accent SE has ABS standard. That was the car that Edmunds reviewed and which is the subject of this discussion.

I think you answered your own question on the Scions--they're dead (Jim) in their present form anyway. But you're right, they do have ABS standard. But not side bags/curtains, as does the Accent (not even available on the xB).

I guess we'll have to differ on what 'Standard' means.

I can read the headline of the article, and so I realize which Accent Edmunds.com tested. But your statement was more broad, which could cause confusion.

"But only the Fit and Accent come with ABS stnadard, in this class."

IMO, that would lead one to believe that ABS is standard on the Accent. It's standard on the SE trim line, and optional on others.

Well if you really want to pull out the Big Nit Pick, go right ahead.

I figured it would be clear from the rest of my post that I was talking about the Accent SE and what the Edmunds' review said about it--not about the entire line of Accents. Sorry that was not clear to you.

That's one thing I like about Honda is that with model they make, the saftey features are standard across trim lines, which is as it should be in my opinion. And from the manufacturer's view, it makes for great advertising, simpler production, and makes it easier for the dealers who don't have to try and lie about how you really don't need the ABS or curtain airbags or something.
