I saw the MDX in person and it was a quite good-looking vehicle. Perhaps you were looking at the pre-2007 model, which wasn't much in the "styling department". In fact, I would say the 2007 MDX is one of the most attractive-looking SUV's in production. "Ugly"? Definitely not. Better go check the lot and ask someone to show you a 2007. As far as the 2007 X5, it's one of the most thoughtful and attractive upgrades BMW has made in a long time. It took them awhile to get on the same page when Bangle came in, but it's clicking for them now.

I own an 07 530i and a Sequoia LTD. All I can say is that I will not buy the Sequoia again. Cheap interior and overtime I felt the ride was too rough. It is a Tundra with shell on it. I am considering replacing it with an X5, MDX, or Q7. But definitely not until all the kinks are worked out. So I would only consider an 08 or 09 SUV.

I notice that road and wind noise levels aren't mentioned in the Edmunds review, nor are they mentioned in the 24 page press release BMW put out on the improvements made in the new X5. Apparently, these aren't considered to be as important as ride and handling qualities, which are talked about a lot. They are important to me, though, and I'd like to read a review that mentions them.

As far as the X5 is concerned, I'm wondering whether it's an X5 that is further-refined without the bugs of earlier versions, or whether it is a largely-new version with an increased chance for problems. I've not seen anything clear about that. I am concerned, however, at the increasing use of computers not just to design vehicles, but to justify the decreased amount of real-world testing; it's an industry-wide problem. I've had three Subaru Foresters in a row and appreciate the fact that the bugs have been worked out; when they introduced the new Outback I was reluctant to become a beta tester for Subaru, so I understand your position.

I agree 100% about the Sequoia. The materials are so cheap and overall it is not a very satisfying car. We just upgraded to the Q7...cant wait for it to come in...

It may have been the pre-2007 model, but im pretty sure it was the 2007. I saw it in a parking lot about a week ago. What i dont like about it is that the overhang in the front is waay to long, the wheels are waayy to small, and it doesnt have enough curves, there are too many hard edges and creases in the sheet metal. I guess the interior is okay, but the exterior is not my style.

No outside armrest, not good. Anyone know how the second row adjusts to access the third row? Tumble or fold down/slide forward. I prefer tumble. It gives you a wider opening. Power third row fold up/down would be nice(ala Lincoln Navigator).

Edmunds has one or two more interior X5 photos courtesy of BMW like this one. Maybe they'll help (maybe the video linked there too - haven't watched it).

BMW added an electronic shifter to this car to create more room in the center console. See those huge cup holders and storage spaces under the arm rests??? Those fill the space that would have contained the mechanical parts of a traditional shifter. The small learning curve required to master a new shifter is a small price to pay for the big upgrade in convenience.
