I ordered the ventilated, active, contour seats (all the seat upgrades). I would say that the contour seats are the most comfortable seats in any vehicle I've ever driven or sat in. These are the same seats as the 750i/760i. They are outstanding.

The ventilation function is nice, but it has a drawback. It requires perforated leather, which only comes in two colors (black or tan), which limits your choices of interior color.

The active "massage" function feels kinda weird: like having python slowly undulate under your seat. I think you'd have to log a lot of very long trips before that function would become worth the money.

Unfortunately, there's no no-cost way to end a lease early. Leases are not friendly to early termination. If I decide to lease instead of paying cash, it's for 12 or 24 months because I know I will want a new car sooner than 36 months.

There are two ways to get out of a lease early: 1) Pay all the remaining payments and turn it in. I did that once on an X3 that had 6 remaining payments at $230 each. 2) Trade the old car in at a dealership or Carmax (for example) and pay the difference between the appraised value and the balance due on the lease. With this option, you don't have to pay excess mileage if you're over the mileage limit on the lease.

Either way, you will pay for the privilege of ending the lease early. Don't expect BMW to be much help if you're trying to trade the old X5 for the newly redesigned X5. The trade-in value on the old model takes an extra large depreciation hit when a completely new model arrives.

Thank you for your feedback!

Yes your are right my X5 did take a big hit on depreciation. I guess the logical thing to do it what another year and a half when the lease is up and get into a new X5 then. The problem is my emotional side is in love with the new X5. It will be a long wait. Thanks for the info! Enjoy your new X5!

The review up today is terrific. Sounds like the new X5 handles wonderfully. The spec sheet on it shows a turning radius of 42 feet- that's Surburban territory, and 5-6 feet wider than its competition. Ouch. They drove it on a race track- but how about a parking lot? Course- I never know if I should really trust all the specs on edmunds.

Are you a member of the BMW Car Club ( bmwcca.org )? Car Club members are eligible for rebates on BMW car purchases if you've been a member for 1 year before you buy the car. If you're going to buy a BMW in a year, a $45 membership fee could get you a $1,000 rebate on an X5. Check out:

There is a third option. When Toyota changed the 4-Runner in the 90's and I wanted out of the lease (to get a non-SUV), I called the leasing company and asked what it would cost for me to purchase the vehicle. Because of a model change the purchase price was much lower. So, I advertised the 4-Runner for sale at the same price as I could get it. The new buyer got a bargain; I got out of the lease without paying anything; and it just took a week to it.
