Turbo cars have a wonderful quality of feeling tame during "regular" under 3k RPM operation, yet having some serious balls above that mark. That is what makes them rather economical yet comfortable commuters as well as fun cars with a great deal of reserve power.

The sales person was clearly NOT taking you on a proper test drive in the MS6. What kind of test drive is it that does not include a run on the Highway? As recommended earlier, you need to at least try a spirited 0-60 to get the true nature of this vehicle. BTW: MS6 engine shines its brightest in the 50-75 mph passing move!

I did manage to get past 3K rpm for a moment, but there was only a modest push, more like a std 4 cyl engine torque curve than boost.

There lies there problem. Get the sucker over 3,000 and it takes off, you really need to drive it again. If you read a C&D issue "Every Day Hero's" They drove the MS6 against the Accord EX V6 6-speed, Pontiac G6 GTP manual, Acura TSX manual, VW Jetta 2.0T manual, and I think there was another...anyways...it smoked all of them, with ease.

Dollar for dollar, that vehicle has no competition in power or performance...

The clutch does feel a bit weird and one takes about a day to get used to it but once you are comfortable it's pretty good. Actually, if you look on some other mazda6 forums, they have a full write up on the cluth adjustment which people report has helped a lot.

I believe the piece you test drove, had it ECU recalibrated ( related to 4106E recall). This results in a taming of inital surge till about (in my car) 3000-3500 rpm. Once you are on a proper stretch and keep the rpm between 3000-6000, it seems as if you never run out of power. Around 85 mph in 6'th , the car was doing 3200 rpm with full 3 passengers, so, even while passing, I never needed to downshift.

As others have suggested, give this car another shot, and stretch its legs a bit more. Need to scrape the surface a little

Keep in mind that the Mazda6 MPS in Europe and Australia does not get any where near the power the USDM gets. 250bhp (I think) Vs. 274bhp.

I Don't think we are really getting the full 274 Ponies after the damn stop-gap PCM flash. We need to get mazda to make us whole again!!! Mazda can we please have another PCM flash that has a little more power and research put into it?? This flash should be for the overwhelming majority of us who can easily get 93 or higher octane?? I guess I better not hold my breath??

You are right about that. I just wanted to point to some video showing the capability of the stock Speed that's all. Jeremy states, he had more fun in that car than some hundred thousand dollar coupes (he still wouldn't buy it 'cause of its looks - I disagree though).

That said, it's all a personal choice. I had rental 3 5-door and enjoyed it a lot. I feel, for my driving style I would like the 3 Speed more than 6 speed. But that's other discussion and I have taken the plunge with a 6 speed anyways.

You are right, the new SAE rating is 270, still 280ft lbs.
