She opened Thursday's work session reading from a letter from John Rowe, Chief Executive of Exelon, one of the country's largest utilities.

Calling the bill written by Boxer and Kerry "an excellent starting point," Rowe wrote, "We urge you as chairman, as well as your colleagues, to take the steps necessary to order the bill reported by the committee so that climate legislation can be considered by the full Senate."

Baucus' vote against the bill reflected the difficulties ahead in crafting a measure that would attract the 60 votes needed for passage by the Senate.

As an influential moderate Democrat, Baucus laid out changes he would seek, including a weaker carbon-reduction target. Other Midwestern and Southern senators from states heavily reliant on coal will seek their own changes, which could upset liberals now supporting the bill.

They know the coal generators will pay more and they will pay less using NG and Nuclear.

Looney Brits asked not to eat lamb.

Aw, come on guys. We're not all looney. Our government is, (are ?), for sure but most of us just want to live in peace and get rid of our ruling class elected representatives/public servants.

The thing about beef and methane is just a pre-cursor to slapping an enviro-tax on cattle. Please God they don't ever realise that oxygen is dangerous.

Some of us would be happy if they just lessened the subsidies. Subsidized grazing is a hot topic out here in the Intermountain West.

When I used that slur I was afraid our favorite Brit would take offense. Of course you know I am referring to the loonies in Parliament and high government offices. We have had our looney politicians suggesting cap n trade taxes on cattle as well. There is no end to the craziness that a government with too much power will wield on the poor working class.

CO2 Measurement by houdini1

While I believe it is technically correct, this just does not seem right to me:

When you burn one gallon of gasoline (about 6 pounds) you generate about 20 pounds of CO2 !!

While you are not really generating the oxygen molecules, the carbon molecules that are released bond with oxygen already in the atmosphere. Oxygen weights a little over 3 times as much as carbon, so the total is around 20 pounds.

Doesn't seem right, but that is how they measure it !!

I never could wrap my head around that one much either. Deficient science and math education.

I hesitate to post this one; guess we'll be talking about the weather after all.

"Climate scientists normally are wary of associating daily weather events to longer term climate change, but new research does just that by showing that daily record high temperatures across the continental U.S. occurred twice as often as record lows over the last decade."

Warning sign: Record highs are double the lows (MSNBC)

My wife is back on a Prius kick so I may get real intolerable in here as I learn the CO2 poundage stats and start bragging about my green cred. (If I get bad vibes about doing the deal, I'll have to bring up unintended acceleration).
