High prices will limit driving especially with low income folks. I do not see us doing what China does - forcing people to drive on alternate days. Car with XYZ123 can drive on odd days and ABC246 can drive on even days. Of course people with even plates get screwed when you have a month that ends in 31. That would be two days in a row the car would be parked (31 & 1).

Replying to: avalon02wh (Jul 18, 2009 6:04 am)  The guy with the Prius driving 20k miles per year is more of an environmental problem than me and my Sequoia doing 5000 miles per year. I still like the tax per mile idea. You get to 10k miles and the mileage tax doubles. Double it again at 20k miles. They do that with Water, Gas and electricity around here. Why not miles of use on our highways? |

You would think the enviro types would be DANCING in the streets on the "bankruptcies" of the Big Four !! That would be that many cars no longer produced domestically. And what in your own words did the democratic president actually do?? Let me clue you , ONLY because you like to pronounce things in total isolation, he didn't say: lights out, the par tays over, now did he??? Perhaps you can tell us who are the par tays new majority/minority owners? As in dot.gov and the UAW!!??? So do you really believe their fondest hopes are to lose money and lots of it??? EPA even laments that we can literally save 23% just by allowing conversion to higher populations of passenger diesel vehicles. This does NOT include the 20-40% diesel fuel advantage !!! On the other hand IAW the EPA, CARB's and the state of confusion, (CA) the population of DIESEL cars has been regulated to LESS than 2%. |

How cool are these ramifications? Arctic Mystery: Identifying the Great Blob of Alaska aka, why drill when you can harvest algae from small to MASSIVE floating farms for... BIODIESEL. ????? You can literally do this anywhere, but how about the desert also!!??? Again pretty simple goals I.E., 10% of the passenger vehicle fleet than can run on engines designed to run on... bio diesel. Now that we are on a row... 23% of the passenger vehicle fleet on D2, which will bring oil demand down a min of 23%. Nat gas passenger vehicle fleet? Whether you are a fan or not, ethanol? Nah we want the LONE RANGER MAGIC SILVER BULLET solution !! ??? Funny how it got us into this intellectual box and continues to "imprison us there!!??? To do so you would have to get them insured first (several hundred dollars for the best drivers) then go to the local DMV where I hear they will refuse your application. You are allowed to PUSH them around however. And you wonder why we have our doubts about the government's ability to manage C&T money?

You get a few influential people (Al Gore) jetting around the World giving speeches with wild unsubstantiated claims and you get a following of believers. Gloom and doom sells better than truth more than not. If Al Gore went and said how much cleaner the rivers are now than 50 years ago or the air in Los Angeles is so much cleaner since they banned leaded gas, who would listen? People want to hear sensational stories. How's the weather in ND this summer? I see the Northern tier is setting low temp records this summer. |

Replying to: gagrice (Jul 18, 2009 1:42 pm)  Test drove a 2101 Prius this morning. The style doesn't do much for me and the ground clearance is a concern, but it drove nice. Very comfortable car. I'm not sure how good my mpg would be this time of year with the AC on full blast (high 90's today). Different kind of bike, but an electric-scooter company just went banko (Vectrix). Tough climate for early adopters right now methinks. (Green Car Advisor) |
