Will the silly 20% raise your hands. Have I got a big carbon credit to sell you... With this in your wallet you can drive your SUV anywhere you like. It includes a bumper sticker so ELF won't torch your car while you are at a complimentary Al Gore speech. The first 10 to sign up get to spend a weekend on the Al Gore GHG yacht.

Don't laugh, in Australia some of the more radical GW cultists have proposed requiring a permit to drive ANY vehicle outside of the city you live in. They also propose taxing vacations taken by car.

But I'm sure it's for our own good.

Who do these nut cases think they are? I don't want some wacko from SF, NYC or London telling me when I can warm myself with a fire in my fireplace. We need to lock them all inside a warehouse with several SUVs running.

Stephen Hockman QC is proposing a body similar to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to be the supreme legal authority on issues regarding the environment.

The first role of the new body would be to enforce international agreements on cutting greenhouse gas emissions set to be agreed next year.

But the court would also fine countries or companies that fail to protect endangered species or degrade the natural environment and enforce the "right to a healthy environment".

The innovative idea is being presented to an audience of politicians, scientists and public figures for the first time at a symposium at the British Library.

Mr Hockman, a deputy High Court judge, said that the threat of climate change means it is more important than ever for the law to protect the environment.

The UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland this month is set to begin negotiations that will lead to a new agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol in Copenhagen next year. Developed countries are expected to commit to cutting emissions drastically, while developing countries agree to halt deforestation.

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, has agreed the concept of an international court will be taken into account when considering how to make these international agreements on climate change binding. The court is also backed by a number of MPs, climate change experts and public figures including the actress Judi Dench.

Mr Hockman said an international court will be needed to enforce and regulate any agreement.

So I guess Black Friday would have to go. We can't allow people to do all that unnecessary driving, just to buy some toys. And that would hurt the economy of us and other countries, , which would be good for reducing production of GHG, by decreasing factory utilization. Wow what a great plan!

And wouldn't the world just be a great place to create another autocratic body that does not have to answer to the people; not being elected. Who are these people that want to be sheep and turn control of their lives over to some bureaucracies?

Instead of creating new agencies we should be reducing the ones we have. Instead of new taxes we need to reduce the ones we have. The world was a much better place in the 50's (would have been perfect without the Cold War).

Lord give me strength. Another bunch of interfering busybody's wanting to control the lives of others. You want to do that - get elected first !! This guy has the added incentive of being a lawyer, so is, of course, primarily attempting to set up yet another useless body that can milk the system for millions of, (choose a currency here), to feather his own nest. Four classes of people I do not want dictating enviromental policy at me : Politicians, Lawyers, Climate Change Experts and Actors/Actresses. The first three 'cos I don't trust any of 'em and the latter because...............how long do you have............? Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh.

Dame Judi Dench is a fine actress and a nice person but what relevance does she - or her ilk - have to this topic ? Why not co-opt Champion the Wonder Horse or Trigger, or Shrek or Skippy the Bush Kangaroo or Willie the Orca ?

This just took me from being a calm, reasonable, pleasant individual who's just spent a nice afternoon going round our local Food & Drink Fair, (yummy), to a raving Grumpy Old Man. If this brings on my third heart attack I will not be a happy bunny. Now there's a threat,

You Brits are so eloquent. I wish I had said all that. For me Shrek has about the most credibility of the bunch.

Cheers...

China has sure been doing well without any tort lawyers.

Want some more melamine in that tall cold glass of milk?

On the bright side, Climate change fight could create many jobs. (AFP)

Well at least we would be correct about you having WMD. But I don't think we'll get around to an invasion anytime soon, as an invasion would just use too much fuel.

Does anyone here seriously think that if the developed world simply goes to electric cars and sequesters CO2, that the rest of the developing world who can't afford this sort of technology, isn't just going to burn fossil fuels in any manner they can?
Do you think the villager in Nigeria who's using pilfered oil products, or the Chinese who use coal to heat and cook are going to stop burning fuels as they do? No.

If CO2 makes a difference in GW, then we had better spend the resources to adapt, because history shows us there is no way to control the behavior of billions of people, especially those who have little material wealth now. 7 Billion people have the inheritant desires to eat, stay warm and use fuels to travel and run machines.

..."or the Chinese who use coal to heat and cook are going to stop burning fuels as they do? No. "...

Indeed the number one foreign supplier to China for coal is... you guessed it... the US of A.!!! Since the skids for this unsung distinction were greased LONG ago by the Clinton administration; as you might remember the VP for that eight year regime was Al Gore? I could be mistaken.? VP Gore did credit himself with inventing the internet.( I didn't know VP's had THAT much free time)

Does anyone even wonder what a democratic dominated House, Senate, Executive branch, state governors, etc., etc. will do about this? As most folks do probably know, we are the figurative and literal middle east of coal.

China really endeavors to be just like us !!!! Just keep in mind as Kernick suggests, we are a population of 300 M vs 2,000 M (2 B) . or 6.7 times the population!

So if anything, turn on even higher the bubble machine !!! Just play more tunes with the global warming theme.

One might further ask, IF solar panels are the policy, instead of coal fired electrical generation plants, how long it would take for a majority of houses to be so equipped? Keep in mind the AVERAGE Chinese family's income is less than 2,000 US per year. With the average solar panel system costing 20-30k installed here, any liberal can do the math!?

Yes, we do have WMD, that's true. However, we cannot freely use the submarine-carried ones. Part of the deal for us having the system was that you guys, in the USA, would maintain control of a link in the fire control chain. So, we can only launch our "independent" system if you folks say it's O.K. to do so.

Guess it's just there to make sure we don't try and take back The Colonies by force.

Sorry this is off-topic but felt the need to clarify the WMD thing.
