Different Hybrid system? by stevedebi

I read somewhere (unfortunately I can't remember where) that the GM hybrid system for the Vue is going to be different from either Honda IMA or Toyota HSD, something to do with placing the electric components on the motor, if I recall. Supposedly it provides 20% efficiency improvement but is not as expensive as the Honda or Toyota systems.

Has anyone seen details of how the Saturn hybrid will work?

It is much cheaper but provides a smaller fuel economy jump. GM thinks this will appeal to a broader audience. I didn't catch the details, but I remember it as somewhat like Honda's old IMA "mild" hybrid system.

The interior was very nicely done, and the leather seats were quite comfortable. It was easy for me and my son to get a good driving position. And they quoted around $23,000 which is a bargain for a hybrid SUV, especially compared to the Escape Hybrid which sells for thousands more.

It's a simpler Hybrid than the Escape or Highlander. The gas engine shuts off when the car is stopped. I don't believe the electric motor can power the car on its own.

MPG figures are 27 city and 32 hwy. Not bad for a "near midsize" SUV. And 0-60 times are a second quicker than the regular 4cyl VUE.

I don't like the 2.2 4cyl but that Honda 3.5 V6 is sweet. And I think it gets 28 hwy. The question: is 4mpg worth the same price as the V6?

Thanks for all the replies, but I am interested in the exact details of how the Greenline system works.

I owned a 2002 Odyssey and got 27 MPG (highway) with that 3.5 V6 engine. I have no doubt it would get better MPG with the lighter Vue. However, in town mileage was only around 18 MPG.

People purchasing hybrid vehicles are not just doing it to save gas. Environmental issues are important as well, perhaps not for you or me but for next generations.

Here is more information as who provides the batteries.

As I said above, the Vue Hybrid will have the 2.4 litre 4 cyl. Right now, the only GMs in North America that have this engine are the Cobalt SS, Ions with the option, and the Kappa cars.

It is a nice engine. It probably has lower emissions than either the 2.2 or the Honda engine.

If the system is reliable, Saturn will definitely have a winner. I am still trying to shake the CVT transmission nightmare from my memory......

As I said above, the Vue Hybrid will have the 2.4 litre 4 cyl.
---------------------------------

Yes, I know. What I'm saying is Saturn should replace the 2.2 with the 2.4 in the base model. It's better suited for a vehicle the size of the VUE.

I like having the choice of a 4cyl but not when they're too small for the vehicle.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

As it happens, the VVT technology in the 2.4 yields almost as good mileage as in the 2.2. I would not be surprised if the 2.4 actually gets better mileage at speed than the 2.2.

GM is introducing the hybrid system in the VUE, but will spread it around to several other models, thus the 2.4.

GM probably opted against engineering a straight 2.4 option in the VUE as there will be an entirely new VUE based on the Opel Antares in Fall '07.
