I have a 2006 that did that with all the gauges flashing at me. I too thought it was my mind playing games, but I took it to Jeep and they did some sort of update and replaced my computer. That fixed that. Just recently, as of Thursday, it didn't start up. It was freezing cold that morning so I figured that was it. We were leaving that morning for a trip too so I was like oh great! Drive went fine, parked at hotel, and next morning decided to try to start it up. Nothing. The boys looked at the battery and it was all corroded (sp?) even to the point of my cable to it almost being corroded in half! It's at the dealership right now being fixed, replacing the battery and the terminal. Hopefully it's the last of my problems otherwise I will trade it in!
Has your Jeep ever had any idle problems when warmed up and driving for about 30 minutes?
I hate how they have to duplicate something in order to fix it!!! I thought there was something in the car that recorded all the stuff that went on and such. Can't they look at that?

Hi, and thank you for replying. I have had issues with it idling. It will drop to like 5 rpms and sound like its going to die. If im at a light or stop sign, it scares me so i just push the gas a little to make sure its not going to die. The battery was tested and it is perfect, along with the alternator and it is not throwing any codes. Its really dissappointing. I really like my jeep too. They said because it is out of warranty and I have an extended warranty that they can not just "guess" the issue. So I am really dissappointed with that since I bought the most expensive extended warranty through chrysler/jeep. I just don't know what to do besides drive it until it breaks with me and my two toddlers and be stranded until they pick it up?? its rediculous!!!

Mine does the same thing. I've sat there and watched it do it. It's never actually died on me because it'll catch itself. Mine idles at about 600-800 rpms, and will drop to 300-400 rpms but catch itself and go back up.
I am not going to buy an extended warranty through Jeep, I'll go elsewhere so I can take it to my mechanic.
I've learned that if there aren't any codes that are flagging the computer then there is nothing they can do. They always need a damn code! What happened to process of elimination? It drives me crazy!!!
I am in the process of contacting Chrysler LLC to file a complaint!

Update to my previous message. My jeep is having a new problem now. At speeds of around 50 to 60 mph, it will suddenly seem to die, but then catch up again. Very scary on the interstate. And the engine light comes on when this happens. It goes off by the next day. Any ideas anyone??
I'm still starting it by turning the key to the second position, then off. After that it starts up but sometimes hesitates a few seconds.

what does it do? mine will sit there and tick like the battery is dead, but it isn't. Sounds like its trying to fire but will not catch...I am taking mine and leaving it overnight at the jeep dealership mid next week to find out what is going on cause it does it every morning or on every cold start for me. So if i drive it there, it will not do it?? Figures...right. But after 6 or more times of trying to start it, it will start. I dont know what the deal is with jeep, but from all the reviews I have read, it will be my last!

The battery was replaced in Aug. last year. The battery has been tested and the alternator. I am starting to wonder if its my starter cause on every cold start, it ticks multiple times. I have to let go and try again 3 or more times before it slowly catches. I dont know anymore. This jeep is going to have to go!! I wish it would just completly break instead of leaving me in the guessing game!
#98 of 276 97 Cherokee starting problems
Feb 15, 2008 (4:30 pm)
After starting my Cherokee and letting it idle for 3-5 minutes, I turn it off. Trying to restart, it will crank, and with the help of pumping the gas it will finally turn over. If I let the truck rest for 10-15 minutes, it will start just fine. I'm thinking that it might be an electrical issue. If anyone has had this problem before please contact me.
Thanks for the help

my jeep will stall while going down the road. sometimes it will start itself back up and sometimes i have to stop and start it. the check engine light does not come on and ive changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump relay, and even taken my fuel rail and injectors out and soaked them in sea foam. ive had people say it was the crankshaft positioning sensor, the "brain", and maybe even my fuel pump. can anyone help?
