I'm interested in the 2008 Escape Hybrid, but one thing that I would like changed is to have disk brakes in the rear instead of drum brakes.
I have a related question for the techs out there: If I replaced the drum brakes with disk brakes, would it have any negative effects on ABS, roll stability control, or possibly the regenerative braking?

Thanks,

I have an 06 FEH. All four brakes are disk brakes. The parking brake uses shoes inside the drum formed by the rear brake rotors. I don't know for sure....but others have mistaken the drum style parking brake as meaning the rear brakes were drum brakes. They are rotor/pad disk brakes. [I would be surprised if Ford has changed the system design "backwards"]

Yes, changing the brake hardware could affect anti-lock performance.

No - the regen system takes place inside the eCVT and is not affected by the brake hardware at the wheels.

The Ford website says:
"Power 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)"

is standard on all 2008 Escapes

I've been to the Ford website (went there again today, 18Feb07) and down-loaded their PDF file on the 2008 Escape. On page 11, it says front disk/rear drum. I've also read a review somewhere (can't find it now, sorry) where they commented negatively on the change from disks to drums, and the stopping distances were unimpressive in the tests that they ran. I would like to buy this vehicle, but now I'm going to wait for a month or two until numerous publications/reviewers publish instrumented test results.
EDIT: Reading a bit further, and more closely, on page 13 it says the Hybrid will have disk/disk, so apparently the regular will have disc/drum and the hybrid disk/disk. This has been a point of confusion for me in reading a variety of previews, and official publications have been known to contain errors, so I'm still going to wait for more published test results.

Yes - the Ford documentation has been notoriously inaccurate about features (ref: MP3 compatible stereos)

Yes - going "backwards" in technology from disk to drum is hard to justify and should be hammered by the media

The gas Escape has rear DRUM brakes

THe HYBRID has rear disk brakes.

Drum brakes are not backwards technology and are perfectly adequate in APPROPRIATE applications.

The Escape is relatively light weight, coming in around 3500 pounds. It is also not really a tow vehicle.

Objectively speaking. Drum brakes are more reliable as a parking/mechanical brake. Drum brakes are much less expensive to service which lowers the cost of vehicle ownership.

Being Objective, if Ford has to save some dough by going with rear drums vs discs but I get Standard Stability control, I say its a good tradeoff.

I love my new Escape Hybrid. I would agree that all FEHs should come with an outside temperature gauge on them as a standard item. I had the cheapest Corolla in the world and it had that feature on it as a standard item. I also wish Ford wouldn't nickle and dime you to death. Floor mats and such should also be standard equipment for a new vehicle.

2008 Model Fixes a Lot of These Issues by lv031170

I just purchased a 2008 FEH and a lot the issues mentioned in this forum are now fixed. The Hybrid has 4-wheel disk brakes. The new center stack is topped by a readout that has the outside temp., radio settings and dual front temp control readouts all at eye level. In addition, the new climate controls include a separate A/C button and recirculating air button. The absence of these have been bugging me for 6 years since I bought my 2001 Escape. So, things have changed for the better. The new Escape is quieter, smoother and quite a bit more refined than the previous model.

If you want outside temp on a Ford, you have to pick a car with auto climate control.

I'm not sure you can find a Hybrid that doesn't have this feature for 2008. I've searched the entire Denver metro area inventory when I bought mine and they all had the dual climate control standard. It's in the "Hybrid Package" as far as I can tell.
