Road noise... by sranger

All I can say is watch out for road noise on the Mariner... I have a 2005 Mariner and it has a LOT ( I Mean a lot ) of road noise at highway speeds... I am going to spend nearly a grand trying to add sound proofing to it...

Other that that very annoying flaw, it is a pretty good little SUV ( or minivan that men will drive to be more accurate )

I test drove an '05 Mariner AWD yesterday, and I thought the road noise was awful, even at low speeds on smooth asphalt city streets. I wonder if this might be a function of brand of tires. Some people have reported on Edmunds that the Mariner is extremely quiet. Not the one I drove.

It is not just the tires. Better tires would help, but basically there is virtualy no sound proofing material in the vehicle. None in the doors, very little under the carpet, none on the underside, almost none in the fender wells, etc....

Also, the glass is very thin and this lest a lot of wind noise in...

This is really a shame, because other than road noise and engine noise it's a really nice vehicle. It looks like they have addressed the noise problem in the 2008 model, but I doubt that it's enough to make a big difference.

Apparently the LR2 is mostly derived from the European Ford Focus, with Volvo engine and suspension components, and an AWD system from Haldex. What surprises me is how the LR2 got so frigging heavy in the process!

Wasn't the Mariner (and Ford Escape) derived from a number of Mazda components?

The LR2 is derived from the EUCD platform which is the large size version of the new ford Focus platform called C1.

The body of the LR2 is stronger then all but the Range Rover and Cayenne and while a lot of that strength comes from special high strength boron steel a lot more comes from simply being more heavy duty then your average suv.
