Replying to: rdoud (Nov 05, 2009 8:06 am) Pay close attention to this -- I went for a ride w/ a honda tech and showed him 3 issues w/ my 2007 ody: 1) the judder (easy to recognize) 2) tach jumps in 1/10s when in 3rd gear, primarily 3) punch, or "shift" feeling (similar to what you describe). Tech said all 3 were the tourque converter -- I was surprised  #3, b/c on these forums I had been led to believe that #3 was just going into / out of VCM. He said that if the VCM theory were correct, the punches should loosely correspond to when ECO light comes on. He said ECO might not exactly be when it goes into VCM or comes out of it, but it is within a few seconds of it... The punches I was experiencing, he said, were the torque converter stop plate slipping. Anyway, they did the software update, and said this fixed the problem. I said I wanted a tech experienced w/ this problem to take it for a test ride before I pick it up. They did this, and the tech found the judder on 5th attemp up a slight incline, under mild accel. So now they're putting in a tourque converter. Dealer said Honda cost for the procedure was $1660, for me it would have been about $2600. All covered under powertrain warranty. On separate note, I asked if they've re-engineered the part now... Tech said as he understood it, they've deteremined the part was always OK, and the shift point definitions were the problem -- so the software update is what you ultimately need to prevent this from happening. |

I'm planning on buying a new 2010 Odyssey. I saw this thread and got a little bit concerned. Does anyone know if Honda has resolved the transmission issues for the 2010 models? I appreciate your feedback.

Honda used to mean "runs forever" as we can see in this forum its not the case. 89,000 miles, just over 10k use a year, and the tranmission needs replacing. Yes servicing was done throughout and the van has been looked after. Honda America says too bad it wasnt a 2001 (part of a $350 million recall) although they acknowldge nothing really changed with the 2002 model  . Local dealer and honda america will do...nothing. Consider this when buying your next vehicle and if they stand behind their products.

| I never thought it would happen to my HONDA, the all mighty dependable, ever lasting car. The trans ran out last week. Took it to dealer and did the diagnose with check engine light. Code was for "torque converter solenoid failure", which according to the dealer means "dead". Contacted the Honda and pretty much got screwed. I am at 74k, way under the 109k miles nut over on the time. Honda offered discount of $900 form inflated dealer cost for replacement. Bottom line I will have to pay $3k for refurbished trans. Called back Honda and he said because I did not have any service record that they can only make this offer. Thought about yelling and screaming but NO worry, I AM FINISHED WITH HONDA. I will do my best to tell everyone that I know not to buy HONDA. Who can take a chance of spending $3k on a call???? LATER HONDA. Sad thing is Honda knew there was a defect but did not do the recall but quietly extended the warranty. | |

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey which just have 65,000 miles. I recently notice it transmission oil. The Honda dealer checked it up and told me that I need to replace the whole transmission. I felt really bad until I read some post in this forum thread. Looks like there was a recall for 99~01 Odyssey model just because of transmission issue. Can anyone who had prior experience with Honda America Inc, or local dealers regarding how the recall is handled? Will Honda cover the full cost of replacing the transmission unit? Thanks in advance

2007 odyssey 28K miles needs new TC converter. Will go with Toyota next time.Also had powersteering fixed 2 times already! Waiting for the next shoe to drop!!!!

Swap it to 2004 Odyssey same power lost after few months, traded to 2007 Odyssey, one year have to change stabilizer also started to feel that power is losing again. (loud noise engine with slow performance) I DO NOT like HONDA anymore. I started shopping for Toyota or Nissan. Goodbye HONDA

Just received a call from my Honda service rep advising of diagnostic codes P0740, P0730, P0780 on my 2003 Honda Odyssey with 81,025 miles on it. Nearly identical symptoms as those previously reported on this site: Engine Check light - ON, TCS light - intermittently on and off, unpredictable gearshifts to 2nd and 3rd gears under varying driving speeds. Have been quoted $4,789 for a remanufactured transmission, $624 for mounts, among other suggested maintenance items. Have registered a complaint with the NHTSA under Confirmation number (ODI Number) is: 10292179. Will call Jared Stamell tomorrow and include my name/join the prospective class action suit. I suspect that there are many other Honda Odyssey owners who experience this problem and are unaware that a class action suit is in the offing. Wonder how they can be reached so they can be aware of such a development.
