Wrightsville: Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your 04. I am have the exact same problem on my 04. I spoke to Honda and they said that my 04 was built after the tranny recall for the bad gear and that they have no record of these sorts of issues, officially. The guy that sold me the car new told me it could be the EGR value; sometimes they get clogged and need to be replaced, but that sounded to simplistic to me based on the shuttering that happens. The tranny fluid is good and is not low. Any info on your experiences will probably save me a lot of time and trouble, since it sounds like the exact same issue. Thanks.

Candyman---I've done a decent bit of research on this in the past few weeks. I'm not a mechanic by any means but the technicians with whom I've spoken have indicated that a clogged/dirty EGR valve can generate a shudder that is VERY similar to the early signs of a torque converter failure. Read this blog, and the comments/responses as well: http://accuratecars.com/blog/2008/11/26/excessive-engine-vibration-with-eco-on-t- he-honda-odyssey-ex-l-and-honda-odyssey-touring/ . Two Honda technicians/service departments have diagnosed my '04 Odyssey shudder as being the "early signs of torque converter failure", not a clogged EGR valve. Both departments indicated that this is a fairly common problem with Odysseys...but that some go 3-4 years and 60k/70k miles with the shudder without causing additional problems. However...I've also read that if the converter fails, it can cause damage to the rest of your transmission, which can be a REAL headache. All of that to say...I think I'll end up repairing mine (just purchased it used from a dealer, so I'm going to negotiate to have most of it covered at no cost to me).

If it turns out to be the EGR valve, you might also check this article to make sure that it's done the right way (different vehicles shown, but same principle likely applies).

How many people have posted for the Odyssey transmission problems. This does not include in the count how many times one posted. For me that would be once, although I have posted more than once on this subject.
Thank you

Possible transmission issues with 05' Odyssey by JasonW

Hi,

I am having a couple of potential problems with my '05 Odyssey transmission that I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on.

The van has about 86,000 miles on it and I've started noticing the following couple of issues:

1) After being in park, and usually when the tranmission moves from 1st into 2nd, there is a brief sort of grind or scrape sound. This only happens when I've been in park before driving. The transmission seemingly shifts fine between all gears after the above occurence happens once (i.e. when repeatedly starting and stopping during normal city driving, etc.).

2) Not very often does it happen, but I've recently noticed what I guess is a temporary shudder when I'm lightly accelerating or maintaining speed. The shudder goes away when I let off the gas or accelerate more. When in cruise control on road trips, this issue hasn't occured.

Regarding #1, has anyone experienced this?

Regarding #2, my van is equipped with VCM. Since the tranmission is only acting up in the way I've described when the pedal is slighly pressed to maintain speed or slighly accelerate, could this issue possibly be related to the VCM which tends to switch between 3 and 6 cylinders when maintaining a certain speed?

Thanks for any help or advice offered,

Jason

well, #1 sounds like the ABS self check. It is pretty noticable on our '05 EXL. It doesn't really have anything to do with being in park. The van does it every time it is first started, at right around (IIRC) 13 or 17 mph. This is normal.

#2 I am interested in. Ours does something similar recently. I also have an Acura TL with 150K on it that does the same thing, but more pronounced.

From some reading, the 2 things that seem to cause this are the torque converter, and a gunky EGR system. Not sure with the TC if it is the unit itself, or the clutch that locks/unlocks it. But I am certainly interested in finding out if you do!

I have an 05 EXL with about 98K on its third tranny.

I have experienced #1.

For the longest time I was experiencing #2 and always thought that it was the tranny, but I replaced the spark plugs about 500 miles ago and that seems to have been gone.

The car feels like brand new, now that I am running it with all synthetic fluids including tranny fluid and new plugs (after the new plugs, the cabin noise has significantly subsided).

Looking at one of the old spark plugs, I can say that the 100k tune-up is total BS from Honda. Seems like the VCM can't deal with spark plugs that are ready to be replaced. Next time I will replace the plugs wat 50K (bought the plugs from amazon at half price of what the dealers charge - same ngk iridiums that are oem for newer hondas and acuras. Had my dealer put those in for me.)

I also have an acura tl 05 with 70k and will probably replace the plugs about 75k.

If you do put new plugs could you please update here with your experience?

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm bringing the van in for some routine maintenance next Friday and I'll have the spark plugs looked at and probably replaced. I'll let you know if it solves the issue.

I think I will also have the tranny flushed. I'd like to know how the fluid looks ...and I'm interested in replacing it with synthetic, but should I use a certain type (after having found a good mechanic years ago, I no longer go to Honda for maintenance and I save a lot of money, while being confident of the quality of work done)?

By the way, can the torque converter be checked out easily to determine if it's working correctly? Or is it usually just replaced when it's suspected to be the cause of certain problems? Thx.

Thx.

Refer to my previous posts. After much research, I have settled for the Amsoil fluid but did not do the flush using the flush machine method. I had my Honda dealer put the Amsoil fluid in for me over 3 "drain and fill" method. The tranny has gotten smoother each time. I now have about 25K miles since the point I put in the amsoil fluid for the very first time and I am very pleased with the results.

BTW, make sure you ask for the old plugs back and see how they look.

Odyssey 2003 Transmission finally gave out by versto

My Honda Odyssey 2003 Transmission finally gave out this columbus day weekend. Its been bad for about 3 years now and I figured I'ld run it till it died. Back at about 60K I took it to the dealer and they said the recall had been applied by the previous owner (I'm suspiscious). I asked for the name of the dealer where this took place and it mystiriously closed so no information was available. No fix was offered to me at that time.

Now at about 90K the transmission failed. I went back to the dealer and was happy to hear the service managers' kind words "Honday may cover the parts at 100% but you will pay for labor". Well that sounded great but the next day he said that Honda would only cover 50% of parts leaving me stuck w/ the rest of the bill. (very dissapointed). I would pay in excess of $3,000 wich included a new designed trans along with computer. So its obvious that thier initial design had problems.

I've read alot of familiar things on line. I wrote letters, made calls and ultimately was just making myself frustrated w/ this as all I got was the run around from Honda USA.

I think that w/ as much revenue Honda makes that this error should be covered by Honda 100%. It will be a sad day when someone gets hurt or dies due to this bad design.

Ive owned 5 Honda's in my lifetime. But because of this injustice I will spread the word and I'm going with Toyota from now on.
