We live in Chicago, so we need a 4 wheel drive. Having a hard time deciding.

Price wise, with the 2006 closeouts on the Infiniti and the Passat, they are both around 29K (pre tax, title, etc). The 2007 Audi is about 3K more.

Driving wise, I thought the Audi was fun to drive, but I'm wary of paying 30 grand for a 4 cylinder car. The Passat was dependable if not a bit boring. The Infiniti was great.

Am leaning towards the Infiniti but wondering if anyone had opinions. I read the thread on the G35 coupe vs. the Audi A4 but wondering if there is additional discussion regarding cars with all wheel drive.

One caveat I have on the Infiniti is that when I sat in the passenger seat, I felt like my head was very close to the ceiling. And I'm only 5'9"! The passenger seat did not have the 8 way power adjustment (only the driver side had that), so I don't think it was raised unusually high. I had to recline the seat a little to feel comfortable, but then I was at a noticeable recline.

I went through this in 2005 and ended up with a G35x. The AWD is awesome. Up to 100% RWD when cruising, and can go to 50/50 when conditions merit.

Was in the Black Hills of SD this past weekend. On Snow/Mud/Slush gravel hilly roads, the G performed like a Jeep! Total control. One night we went to dinner on 3 inches of slushy ice covered asphalt road. No drama, just drove with no slipping around. The AWD works instantly and the car just goes where you point it.

The car also is a wonderful cruiser. 85-95 on I 90 including some slick streches, the car just rides along. Fuel economy is not the strong point, only 23 mpg. But we had three people and a full trunk along with temps in the twenties.

The driving dynamics of the Infiniti Attessa awd are hard to complain about. In 2005 Infiniti had the best awd system available IMHO. After 24K miles in 15 months I still like the choice made.

I also felt that the A4 was a lot more fun to drive than the Passat and I preferred the A4's tossability to the G35s power (but I loved driving both the A4 and G35). I mainly wanted to respond that as a slim, 6-3 driver, I concur that there is more headroom in the Audi. The G35, while having a bigger backseat and maybe a little more butt and shoulder room, has a lower roofline, thus affecting visibility. Did you also find that difference from the driver's seat? Also, the G35's seats do not fold down.

The MPG difference is pretty big. EPA rates them at:
Audi - 22/30.
Infinity - 19/25.
I think CR and Edmunds test drives confirm a 5 mpg overall difference.

Why would that be? Chicago is one of the flattest places in the known universe. Snowfalls are measured in inches, not feet and roads get plowed so ground clearance isn't an issue. Any FWD car with modern snow tires will work perfectly well.

The AWD in a A4Q, G35x, or Passat 4Motion with stock tires is going to be useless braking and cornering in the snow or ice. None of them have more than 5" of ground clearance so you're not going to venture out in any of them in true snow driving conditions. You're going to be on plowed roads. "Need" 4WD? Nope.

If you lived in a big snow microclimate... say, drove up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird every day, you'd "need" 4wd for the climbing traction and ground clearance. ...and the 4.2" ground clearance of an A4Q would be a big problem no matter what you use for tires.
