Keepin' the battery up.. by demoncarnut75

I have a '94 Buick with problems ranging from the air compressor for the suspension(which came with the car) running when the car is sitting in my garage, which consequently runs the battery down. I also have a problem with high idling and the speedometer not working, which I have been told can either be traced to the ECM or the corresponding sensors. It's a real shame, because aside from a few cosmetic problems, the car runs really well for its age. I'm pretty much stumped right now...any ideas?

Checking in another group it sounds like there may be leaks in your compressor or the lines at the struts. They might be seals with compressor oil like for an air compressor at Harbor Freight. Others suggested that a weak alternator is not charging the battery completely; a weak battery would run down from the compressor cycling. It should turn on and cycle after a few seconds of pumping up the pressures again. I would think it shouldn't run when the car is turned off.

Are you sure it's the compressor for the air leveling struts. I know the heater blower fan can run after the car is off because of the electronic board for the fan speeds failing and leaving the heater blower running.

Same group suggests high idle and no speedometer may be the ECU/PCU, in other words the computer. They claim 94 and 95 H bodies and another GM model used that computer for only those two years. The EPROM chip is removed from your old computer and placed in the new computer...

Now that you mention it, the heater controls do go on the fritz a lot. It cycles back and forth through the pushbutton controls (heater, defrost, vent, bi-level, etc.), but the fan speed is controlled by a switch instead of buttons like the vent control. I know the noise I'm hearing comes from the compressor for the struts. I've zeroed that down some time ago. Perhaps I do need to check for leaks...
As far as the computer goes, I have already taken it out of the car and the repair manual says the numbers on the ECM and PROM chip should match...would it be possible to take the computer somewhere by itself to have it checked? At the very least, it would be helpful to find some kind of resource online to be able to check the numbers. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

Do you know that your battery is in good shape? Funny things can happen with the electronics when the battery is not good anymore.

You are saying that you have the manual control AC? If it has a level then it does not have the electronic circuit board to control the fan speeds. I has the resistor set for the lower speeds and the high speed is controlled by a relay on the firewall.

Another thing is the ground bus connector that's under the plastic around the doors right below the parking brake area. Are there any other symptoms? Power door locks not working and then working again?

Frankly if your battery has a few years and may have been teased to death by the pump for the load height compressor running, that's the place to start. Walmart would be an easy pick. Many stores will check battery and alternator free. You can take your battery in to some stores, like Advance Auto, and they'll test it and charge it up. That would be a way to tell if it's marginal. Sears, not my pick, or Walmart and others will check the alternator output.

If the tail light has a double filament, it might have one filament blown out. That's usually been the case for me.

I have a 1997 Buick Le Sabre. The speedometer isn't working. Can you tell me how to locate the ECU cable or sensors for the speedometer or if this involves the computer on the car. elaine13

I have taken the controls out of the steering wheel by just gently working with them with a small screwdriver. It is a pain to get them plugged back in because of the short wires. I would like to find a solution to the steering wheel control lights not working.
