I have a 97 Cadillac STS with 113,000 miles with a blown head gasket, I have found a 2000 model engine with 38k and would like to install it, please don't tell me it can't be done as I intend to do it and may even get it done before I get the answer here. I do know Hollander Interchange doesn't show it will intewrchange, the heads have a different interchange #, but that doesn't mean it will not work, Hollander does show the timing chain cover is the same. Ok, I do know this the 2000 model engine has coil on plug, so I intend on using the 97 valve covers and coil pack and wiring harnesses. Not sure if the intake is different, but I plan on using the 97 intake as long as it bolts on. What I do not know is if all the 97 accessories will bolt on and what other mods will need to be made, I expect some of the sensors to be different. Looking at it, I think I can pull the engine out the top on the 97 after removing radiator, fans and plumbing at the rear of the engine to access bell housing bolts. I know there has to be someone out there has knowledge on this, in case you are wondering I am a ASE certified mechanic, have pulled a newer cadillac engine before, but limited experience on Cads, but would love to have one! I had to do the exact same thing for my 97 STS, but the motor came out of a 99 STS. as you know I ended up having to use the 97 harness, but during the transfer I broke off that litte gray harness that connects the the side of the block between the rear head and the transmission. I think it had about 5-8 black wires coming out of it and it went to the block???? but i broke it. some say they are grounds, some say they are for the injector, and a few even told me that they could be what preventing me from getting any PCM codes. I don't know but my symptoms are : NO PCM CODES, Theft system problem (Car may not restart), no spark, no gas, the pump does not come on and it was working perftcly well before my travesty, help!! How can I spice that grey connector into the harness and for the sake of sanity can somebody tell what the heck that devil (what it is, what does it do?, where does it belong?) please-make-me-cheese? Replying to: dirtyd1 (Nov 16, 2006 6:13 pm) First, I have to say was unable to use the 2000 engine, just two many differences, will make a separate post later, but when I thought I could work out all the differences, I found that the crank sensors on the 2000 model engine had a three pin connector and the diameter of the 2000 sensors was larger (that was the final straw, I figured around every thing else). Ok, don't remember the gray connector but it does make since that they are the ground, usually black is ground. Did all the wires go to the block? if so then they would be ground, and probably for the injectors, fuel pump and for the PCM to communicate.........Not sure without researching, but I thought the injectors had power and the PCM provided ground when the PCM received the input from the crank sensor. If you still have this problem email me at nwmoautoexcite.com and I will research the wiring and schematics for you, be nice if you could send a picture just to make sure I know which connector and all the colors of wires at the connector.
