Have you had an Eclipse or a Spyder out for test drive lately? Tell us about it.

Almost all the reviews I have read give the 0-60 time for the manual transmission. How much of a penalty do you see with the auto? With the manual I see times of 5.9 to 6.7 seconds.

Test drove both a 4cl. Spyder (underpowered) and a 6cl. Eclipse. Both handled and drove well for my liking, comfortable seats, nice road feel, great dashboard and console visibility, just really fun to drive. The 4 cl. is a bit underpowered for any kind of sport type driving, but, where can you do that too much these days without a cop lurking around the corner. The 6 cl. has right torque steer on hard acceleration and can jump left if you over correct, not really a major issue.
I just purchased an auto Spyder GT at Burlington Mitsubishi this past friday and drove it back home in a snowstorm. I paid sticker price which included a factory cover, don't pay their dealer added profit enviro package of almost 2 grand. I also looked at and drove the Solstice and the Sky, ok for day trips, but, almost zero storage in the trunk and none what so ever in the cockpit unless you're buy yourself and the passenger seat is empty. The GM products also have inferior interior plastics and not so great paint jobs in my opinion and after you load up a GM with the same accessories that come standard with a 6cl. Spyder, you'll spend a couple grand more.

I test drove a GT Spyder V-6 and ordered one the same day. This is after testing a Solstice. The other comments about the solstice are accurate-no storage, etc. AND, the top is manual vs. the Spyder's power top.

Plenty of power (for me at least) and adequate storage for a weekend trip for two or longer solo.

I got every available option and probably paid too much but what the hell-I love the car!

I was in Florida for a few days last week so I took the opportunity to take a real world test drive in a rented Eclipse GS. Sharp looking car even in the silver color which I hate.

First thing I read about the GS is that the 4-cyl. is underpowered. This car seemed fast for only 162hp. I was expecting a dog because of the weight but this car was faster than my small Chrysler which has a 6-cyl with a few more horses and 300 pounds less weight (must be that MIVEC). The exhaust note was beautiful. The engine was very smooth, no thrashing at high RPM. In fact this was the first rental car I've had in a long time that didn't run like it had been beaten to death. No, it wasn't brand new. It had 22K+ miles. This is usually when the rental companies get rid of cars but this one ran like new. Most 4-cyl cars I've driven have decent pick-up off the line but run out at higher speeds. The Eclipse felt like it the acceleration actually increased as it went faster.

The handling was pretty good too. I wasn't able to really fling it around but I took some highway ramps at around 60 without any trouble. I doubt you'd mistake the Eclipse for a Mini or a Corvette but it was better than any family sedan.

The interior is snug like most sporty cars although it seemed bigger than an Altima coupe I recently sat in. The back seat had no leg room. Visibility was good except out the rear quarter (like most coupes). While I was getting used to this I almost swiped a car that was in my driver's side blind spot...Yikes! Turning circle is as bad as the reviews say it is. Interior gauges are too small in my opinion. Seats were comfortable. Standard 140 watt stereo was fine for me but I know nothing about stereos.

All in all I give the Eclipse an A-. It has a few design elements I would like to see changed but nothing that would prevent me from buying one. For me personally, I would buy the GT for the bigger engine, but that's just me.

"...I think oldfarmer is doing the driving..."

Yea, that looks a lot like me...just 30 years younger and 40 pounds lighter.
