We had the same problem with our 2004. VOB BMW in Rockville, MD said they were well aware of the problem and fixed it. I think it was a strut they had to replace. In addition to going over bumps, we also heard the noise when making relatively sharp turns. It is a very annoying sound!

I have a 2004 M3 convertible. It makes the same noises. The dealership told me there was nothing they could do. They did try to tighten it up where it clips in but no change. They said they have the same problems with all convertibles. I know this doesn't help to hear this. I cope with it by turning up the stereo. Not the smartest fix.

I have heard that there is some kind of sensor that may be causing some of the problems, but that may be more due to heat issues.
