According to the phone service rep, Nissan cannot cancel dealer orders, but my dealer said that's what happened. Who's right? What is the actual process? Being I'm having trouble, I called around to see if any Fits are available in my area, and the Honda dealers seemed to have a VERY clear idea of the dates Fits where being produced, ship out, and received. Does Nissan have a less precise system for checking on cars that they are supposed to receive or something? |

I am wondering if each dealer is different as far as what info they have access to. Perhaps the larger dealers have access to more info on the computer than the smaller dealers...I don't know. I do know that when I ordered from the first dealer, they claimed Nissan had to "approve" the order which took a day or two. The second (and larger) dealer just went into the Nissan system, put my name on a vehicle already ordered, changed the options to what I wanted, and gave me an ETA. No Nissan approval required. They even printed off the actual order with my name on it. The first dealer just gave me a handwritten sheet of paper. The whole process took about 15 minutes but I jacked around for two months with the smaller, local dealer and got nowhere. The larger dealer also claimed that some of their early orders were canceled by Nissan and they had to reorder. That dealer said they believed Nissan had promoted the Versa but were not geared up for production in time. Of course, you'll never get anyone on the hot line to admit that.

That led me to call a larger (but by no means large) Nissan dealership just down the road from my house, and the sales manager there was more than helpful explaining the ordering process and the various stages of order confirmation that they receive. He had never heard of Nissan cancelling orders, but did mention that smaller dealers's orders may get bumped because Nissan looks at sales volume when considering orders. However, he said that if the dealer put a specific name on the order, it should get precedence. He even tried to look up my order with his computer, but couldn't find it. He said that orders with names do not appear in the general system, so that gives me hope that mine will arrive sooner than the ones he pulled up (Jan./Feb.).

Through phone calls and computer searches, he was able to find out that Nissan can indeed cancel orders if the factory is not set up to handle them and can even cancel orders with customers names on them. (This has been particularly true with the Versa.) If that happens, he said the dealer will get a credit for the cancelled car, and the customer should be notified within a couple of weeks to a month of the order. In my case, I did not get notification from the dealer until last week after I called them asking for an ETA update. (My order was put in mid-, late-August) All I have to say is that if you want a Versa with ABS, I agree that you'll have to wait until next year. And even if you place a specific order, Nissan may indeed cancel it, so stay on top of your dealer about it. Me, I'll be looking at other makes after this Nissan experience.
