dont know about the canadian builds....US builds you can simply turn the auto light function off by twisting the switch on the arm and the chimes ring telling you the auto function is disabled and the DIC shows the auto lights off.....it re-engages everytime you turn the car back on

as far as the headlights burning causing a reduction in gas mileage......your belts are still turning always charging your electrical system.....regardless of the power drain...

My '04 USA spec Maxx LS had the same issue - Headlights came on way too early (sun being near horizion was enough light decrease to set mine off. Unfortunately there is no way to adjust the thing. Workaround was as previous: switching Headlights to manual mode for those lighting situations.

Unfortunately the Canadian models don't have that option. The only time we can override the auto lights is when in park. Some useful.

I am having the exact same problem with my '05 model ... and more.

I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx LT (87,000 miles) with what appears to be a ghost! My power door locks "go crazy" by locking and unlocking themselves continuously. This happens while driving, parked, and even with the car completely shut off. I have often locked the car at night, and come out in the morning to find it had unlocked itself. This is an intermittent problem that will occur for a week, then not happen for a week or so... repeat.

The power lock buttons on both driver and passenger side do not work - I have to manually lock all 4 doors. The key fob will not lock or unlock, but the panic button does work. I can unlock the doors (driver, all and hatch) from outside using a key, but cannot lock them in this manner. This problem occurs consistently, whether the "crazy ghost" is at work or not.

I believe there may be a connection to another problem with my battery dying when the doors are left open or accessories are left on for 5-15 minutes without the car running. This happened consistently for a few weeks, but has "magically" stopped.

My alarm also automatically arms itself. I can close the door and open it again 5 seconds later and the alarm goes off.

In addition, my front passenger turning signal lamp will not work. The bulb has been replaced twice. The first time it worked for 3 days, then blew again. The second replacement bulb never worked once.

But wait, there's more! The Information Center randomly says "Low Coolant" or "Check Gas Cap" when there is no problem with either...

Could all this be related? Hopefully a simple wiring problem or short somewhere?

Sounds like your body control module (BCM) has gone south. We had the exact same problems with our '98 Chrysler minivan and replaced the thing and later had it rebuilt, $800 for new one from the factory, $225 to rebuild it recently through DirectAuto.com.
It may be a relay or fuse(s), if you want to try swapping similar relays around and check fuses, go for it, but with electrical things I suggest just going straight to a reputable, independent auto electric shop. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply!

Since my last post I have checked the fuses - all seemed ok, except the fuse-style resistor for the key cylinder just fell out. Funny thing, the key cylinder lock still worked without it!?! I also pulled out the trim panels in the trunk looking for a chaffed wire... all seemed fine there too and I couldn't get the locks to click by wiggling wire bundles. However, wiggling a wire near the battery in the engine compartment caused the security system to go into lock-down mode with a relay clicking somewhere for a good half hour (horn fuse was pulled, TG!) - pretty suyre that was unrelated.

All signs now are pointing to the BCM, as you suggested. I have an appointment with the dealer on Monday. I will followup with the official prognosis for others looking into similar problems!

Thank you again!

I HAVE A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH AN '05 MAXX AND IT'S BRAKE LIGHTS. THEY COME ON WHEN THE BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED, BUT DO NOT COME ON WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED! THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, BUT WILL BE A BIG PROBLEM AT THE WRONG TIME WHEN SOMEONE HITS ME FROM BEHIND. HAS BEEN WORKED ON TWICE, BUT STILL HAPPENING.

Headlight Housing Mounting Hardware by scanman88gt

The passenger side headlight housing on my '06 Maxx is vibrating while driving and causing the light coming out of the bulb to "shimmy". There are two bolts at the top of the lamp housing which hold the housing tight against the radiator support. The bottom of the lamp housing has two "posts" or pegs which line up with and fit into two square holes in the sheet metal behind the housing. There is a good deal of space between these two "posts" and the inside of these two square holes, which is why I'm able to move the bottom of the lamp housing up and down.

Is there some kind of clip or fastener that I am missing which are supposed to attach to these two square holes in the sheetmetal which are supposed to hold these two "posts" firmly, in order to keep the bottom of the lamp housing from shaking?

First thing to check is the brake light switch. It may be defective or have come loose. Good luck.
