jamhb -- I have a 2001 allroad with 90K miles just diagnosed with faulty air suspension airbags. There are only 2 airbags for the car (I thought there would be 4, 1 per wheel), located in the front, that control "all 4" suspension points. $704 per airbag plus 2.5 hrs labor per airbag = $2,025 repair bill at YBH dealer Edgmont, PA (Philadelphia suburb).

HISTORY: Over the last month, I noticed some mornings the front suspension was "bottomed out" but the rear appeared normal height. As soon as I unlocked the car and opened the door, the car would level itself within a minute (without the car running, without the key in the ignition). I guess there was enough pressure in the reservoir do raise the suspension without the engine on and the compressor running. A couple times with the car resting in the driveway, the front would lower within just a few hours. And sometimes it would sit for 2 days and not lower at all.
PRIOR HISTORY: In March 2008 the car was completely "bottomed out" front and rear suspension. And the air suspension warning light was on constant. Dealer diagnosed and repaired a faulty module, $1,000. They say the faulty airbags are unrelated to the module airbag. i wonder if the faulty module led to the bottoming out, and the bottoming out stressed the airbags (being in a scrunched/compressed position they normally are not in) thereby damaging (causing a leak) the airbags. I'll never know.

My advice is that (if you want to keep your allroad) you consider purchasing Audi dealer certification warranty which covers all mechanical/electrical for 2 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. Get the details from your dealer. It's too late for me. I love the performance and luxury of the allroad but I cannot afford it. Dealer said they see this problem regularly on allroads and guess tha Audi has not had enough to warrant a recall.
Good luck.

No, there are 4 airbags, one at each corner. Find a good independent mechanic to replace the airbag for half what the dealer charges. You can find the airbag itself for around $500 online. Any mechanic can handle the replacement as it is quite easy. Unfortunately, the airbags eventually wear out on these cars. Plan on replacing one or two over the life of the car. The fronts will be the ones that fail. The amount of droop depends on what suspension position you're in when you park--sometimes the hole is sealed by the fold in the airbag at lower positions.

Invest in an aftermarket warranty. Be sure to get one that specifies exactly what is NOT covered. If it's not listed, it's covered. This is the best coverage. If you get one that lists only the things that ARE covered, it will be easy for them to not pay to fix items that are unique to the allroad such as the air suspension.

Look around the Internet for other allroad discussion to learn a lot more. Hope this helps.
