Hi. I hope that someone can help me! I bought a used 2001 allroad from Carmax 4 months ago. It is a 6-speed manual with 70,000 miles on it. I bought the car to replace my A4 Avant, and I love it. It is not easy to find a manual wagon, which I need to lug my twin toddlers around. Anyway, I have had no problems until last week when my airbag light suddenly came on and stayed on. At the same time, my blinkers stopped blinking. I figured I had an electrical problem and took it to a dealership. When they did the diagnostic, they basically said it is two separate issues; I need a new hazard switch for my blinkers, and they are saying that the entire airbag module is fried and needs to be replaced. Of course, I do not have a warranty. They are charging me $1300 to replace the entire airbag module. I want to know if anyone else has had this problem. I know that my A4 had a recall associated with the airbag, but it was totalled before I had the chance to take it in. I don't really get how the module can just suddenly fry like this. Shouldn't Audi be responsible for replacing a part that is obviously damaged from the start? Also, how do I know this is really the problem? When I tried to get more info from the mechanic, he described it as a "brain fart" in the airbag system, so that was of little use to me...I know that I can't drive a car with a broken airbag system, but I am reluctant to spend that kind of money on something that I feel was out of my control. I would appreciate any advice you have! Thanks.

Replying to: roundel (Nov 28, 2005 5:04 pm) My blinkers started acting haywire last week. They would come on normally then click out of control. This was on both the left and the right signal. Now they don't come on at all and click at high speed as if they needed to be replaced. What is the likelyhood that all 4 signals went out all at the same time? Not likely me thinks. Now this morning, I had the headlight indicator light come on. I got out of the car and sure enough the front right light was out. I turned the lights on and off and it still was out. I turned the car off to get coffee and when I came back out and turned it back on, the light was fine! What gives! I did have the airbag indicator light stay on extra long this morning as well. It did eventually go off after about 5 minutes of driving, but I'm thinking there is something electrical happening. Worth noting as well, the suspension has started to act funny too. I searched this forum (which is awesome by the way) and think I have a leak in my air system. Hopefully these aren't all related! Did you ever get the 'electrical' issue fixed? |

I have a 2002 Allroad with 55,000 miles. The Air suspension started taking longer to raise to driving level in the morning, and now the Air Bag Suspension will not raise the car at all. Any similar problems out there, or any advice?

Replying to: jamhb (Jan 01, 2008 3:18 pm) HISTORY: Over the last month, I noticed some mornings the front suspension was "bottomed out" but the rear appeared normal height. As soon as I unlocked the car and opened the door, the car would level itself within a minute (without the car running, without the key in the ignition). I guess there was enough pressure in the reservoir do raise the suspension without the engine on and the compressor running. A couple times with the car resting in the driveway, the front would lower within just a few hours. And sometimes it would sit for 2 days and not lower at all. PRIOR HISTORY: In March 2008 the car was completely "bottomed out" front and rear suspension. And the air suspension warning light was on constant. Dealer diagnosed and repaired a faulty module, $1,000. They say the faulty airbags are unrelated to the module airbag. i wonder if the faulty module led to the bottoming out, and the bottoming out stressed the airbags (being in a scrunched/compressed position they normally are not in) thereby damaging (causing a leak) the airbags. I'll never know. My advice is that (if you want to keep your allroad) you consider purchasing Audi dealer certification warranty which covers all mechanical/electrical for 2 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. Get the details from your dealer. It's too late for me. I love the performance and luxury of the allroad but I cannot afford it. Dealer said they see this problem regularly on allroads and guess tha Audi has not had enough to warrant a recall. Good luck. |

No, there are 4 airbags, one at each corner. Find a good independent mechanic to replace the airbag for half what the dealer charges. You can find the airbag itself for around $500 online. Any mechanic can handle the replacement as it is quite easy. Unfortunately, the airbags eventually wear out on these cars. Plan on replacing one or two over the life of the car. The fronts will be the ones that fail. The amount of droop depends on what suspension position you're in when you park--sometimes the hole is sealed by the fold in the airbag at lower positions. Invest in an aftermarket warranty. Be sure to get one that specifies exactly what is NOT covered. If it's not listed, it's covered. This is the best coverage. If you get one that lists only the things that ARE covered, it will be easy for them to not pay to fix items that are unique to the allroad such as the air suspension. Look around the Internet for other allroad discussion to learn a lot more. Hope this helps. |
