Replying to: teeroee (Apr 04, 2008 12:21 pm) I did remove the air cleaner and the throttle body. It is simple to remove. I don't remember all of the steps but it was extremely easy to do. The hardest part of the job was removing the screws from the heat shield on the exhaust. I believe they are 10 mm. I used a socket wrench. Of course the screws nearest the front of the car are easy to get to. Just take your time and think about what you are doing, all will be fine. Brian

i own 2002 aztec and i was driving down highway then all of a sudden my temp gauge went right to the top so i let i cool down and tried again then it happened again shortly after drove maybe 1 mile, keep having this problem also i would add some water then as soon as i began to overheat it seemed to drain rad into the overflow thus leaving my rad empty. i didnt see any coolant in oil but one time i had to stop i noticed white smoke out of exhaust this only happened one time the other times i had to stop no smoke. would this be caused by a bad thermostat or something else. a quick reply is needed as i need to repair this to drive to work three hours away. any info would be greatly appreciated Replies to this message: bmurf1 (Aug 09, 2008 5:38 pm) Haydentown (Feb 07, 2009 10:07 am)

Replying to: tweatherby (Aug 08, 2008 1:36 am) It seems to me if you saw white smoke, you either blew a head gasket or an intake manifold gasket. These engines are known for intake gaskets failing. Replying to: bmurf1 (Jan 07, 2008 3:20 pm) My wifes car has overheated once and gets hot when sitting still and the heater doesn't work. The heat comes on for a while but then just shuts off. It comes on when the car cools down. I am guessing that this is the therastat.   I am going to replace it tonight. Any help would be great. I seen that you said that I only have to remove the heat shield. So nothing about the air cleaner assembly?

Well I changed the thermostat and still have the same problem. The car still wants to get hot and occasionally overheat when idling in a drive through or whil sitting in traffic. I know that the car has a intake leak so I was wondering if this could be the cause. Tonight I will get a temp. sensor to put into the car to see if this helps. Please let me know if you have any ideas.   If anyone wants any help on changing the thermostat just email me at Mrenkenjuno.com. Its actually pretty easy. We bought a 2001 Aztek last year, have loved it so far, but the other night the alarm went off suddenly to check gauges and the engine was overheated. I stopped, let it cool down and then drown 1/2 mile home. The light came on again on the way to the mechanic the next day. They say the head gasket is blown and want $2500 to $3000 to fix. Mostly labor. Is it worth fixing this car with all these problems I am reading about? I still owe on it, so maybe I don't have an option, but I'm not sure how to go with this? Shoud we attempt to do this ourselves and same some money on labor? Don't know but need some help!!!

Hi Everyone,   I do love my 02 Aztek but I have been having some issues with it recently. The vehicle has 100k on it and I've put 60 on it myself. This afternoon I was driving down the street and the "high coolant temp" light came on. I was told that it could be the thermostat (10 bucks at local auto shop). I switched that sucker out today and just took to out for a spin. Same thing. The "high coolant temp" light came on and the engine temp gauge was in the red. I shut the engine off and let it cool down. When I drove home I watched the temp guage go up and down and then finally spike and the light went off again.   Also, when I put the new thermostat in I did not get any radiator fluid leakage. I checked the reservoir and it was full.   Any thoughts?   Thanks,   Chad
