As for you saying 66 mpg is just a lie,you must have a bad Geo.I got handed down the family's 92 Geo Metro XFI.It has 120,000 miles on it.I was not aware of it's mpg capabilities. So I drove it from Redmond,Oregon ,over Mt.Hood and into Sandy,Oregon.I had noticed the gas gauge hardly moved. So I went and filled it up.The end result was 59.5 mpg.I laughed my !#$%^ off.And that was going over a fairly steep and long pass.So then I drove it to Tacoma,WA. A fairly flat drive. When I filled up.I then got 62.9 mpg.So it is not a lie.It is a noisy engine, and not a very comfortable car.But at the price of gas I will keep it and keep rebuilding it for ever,or until it falls apart.Oh ya,it held 65-70 mph coming over Mt.Hood with my car full of stuff.

thanks for the imput on this car I bought.yea I bought it.I am a manual micky mouse mechanic in my spare time.It looks like I got me a night mare on my hands ayy.I did a compression check and got 180 in1,180 in2, 80psi. in#3. Alittle oil squirted in did not change much.bad valve or valve I figured.so I got to the labling and disconecting and over a few days of part timing on it.pulled the head. You are on the money,a burnt exhaust valve #3.on e-bay i bought a rebuilt 96 1liter head with supposely bout 200 mile on it.this metro turned out to be a 1991 after closer look after Idid buy it.this 96 head will work.write now I am waiting onshipment on the head.I am a little overwelmed with this job because I plan to swop my original cam to the new head.the manual is not the best, not real clear.sounds like insert type bearing are involved.passed experience on engines isrebuilt a64 ford econoline
straight 6,head job on a86 celica head job.rebuilt a few motorcyclecarbs, and clutch es on a few bikes.give me a manual ,I will try it .lots of brake jobs a couple master cylinder rebuilds.so maybe I will get thru this one.thanks again for the input..

Does anyone know where Geo Metro engine number lists can be found?
Especially as to the different engine and transmission configurations?

I know a lot of people will cringe at this post: but to save about 100bucks on the valve replacement I was able to reuse the graphite head gasket on a 92 metro, with no problems--(if the seat is undamaged you can replace just the faulty valve and lap it in) seems like the valve was only 15-30$

I live 80 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada. Have a 99 Metro hatchback stick shift. Have given up trying to teach my wife to drive it. Want to buy a Metro hatchback with automatic transmission. They are hard to find. Any ideas where I can go (other than driving to Los Angeles or Phoenix)? -- Donald

I'm thinking about buying a 2000 Metro with about 140,000 miles. Asking price about 1,800. Is this a good car? What MPG can I expect? Is that too high of mileage? Is the price fair? Even if cheaoer, would you buy? Should I?

I just hit 130 thousand miles on my '97 geo metro. Granted it appears that the prior owner put a "new" used engine in it so maybe the odometer was turned back or maybe not, but the fact remains my odometer has not turned back to zero.
I think these cars are worth they're weight in gold . . if you dont care what people think, and you commute, and you dont mind the extra care you have to take like topping off the fluids often. I damaged my engine after 3 yrs of use. I let the oil go to NOTHING twice ! Shame on me ! Against the warnings and ridicule of my gas guzzling wealthier relatives I am contemplating putting my own "new" used engine into my '97 Geo Metro. I have put a new fuel pump, muffler, catalytic converter, alternator, 4 all weather tires, 2 snow tires, and a battery into it but STILL my math shows me that I'm coming out ahead except in the vanity and impressing dept. My relatives are pressuring me to buy a new used car for 2 thousand. I say for that price I can put in a "new" used engine (that has 50th miles on it) and get another 3 yrs out of my Geo. Afterall it is the "devil I know" rather than the devil I don't know. I actually consider it an ECO Classic and worth preserving into many decades. It gets 40mpg and can seat 4 people . . . UNLIKE the new SMART CAR which gets 41mpg and seats only 2 people.
