Has anyone solved the fog lamp switch problem? by texasptdriver

My 2002 PT is experiencing the fog lamp switch problem. I bought the car new in November 2001 and it has 45,000 careful miles on it. I had experienced the problem last year, but I was able to turn the light off. I went out to drive the car yesterday and it wouldn't unlock with the remote, so I opened with the key and discovered a very dead battery. I hooked up my car starter/battery charger (at about 9PM) and every light came on with the alarm blaring as loud as it could. I was unable to turn anything off, so I disconnected the battery charger. It was like the car was possessed by the Devil. I am at a loss at what to do. I will probably have to tow it to a mechanic, hopefully not the Mopar dealer. I am curious to find out what the rest of you have done to fix this perplexing problem.

In a word.... no.

It has been a year since our PT was possessed (see my previous posts in the #60-65 range on this board) and, as I said before, the problem...just...stopped... happening. Wish I could give a reason, but the only thing that was changed by the mechanic was a perfectly good fuse ~ and it is only because I insisted on it that he changed that.

Hope I haven't jinxed myself now.

I don't know if this is good news or not to you, but from our experience it is best to take it to a competent independent mechanic and not a dealership. The dealer's solution is to start replacing wiring harnesses at $500 a pop until the problem goes away. The indie gearhead is more practical and economic. Just be prepared to be without the car for a period of time as it will not be a quick 'fix'. Our guy had the car a week the last time. But since he couldn't find the problem and did no changeouts, he didn't charge us a dime for it. I love the guy! He's in Mount Vernon, WA.

Well, I'd start by disconnecting the negative battery cable before you try to charge it. After it is fully charged reconnect the cable and see if the problem goes away.

Weird things have been known to happen when the operating voltage is too low. On my old car I knew my battery was low when the wipers would come on automatically.

I am having the exact problem with my 2001 Limited. I just paid my Chrysler dealer to tell me what the problem IS NOT. Fuses, relay, light switch. We had already relplace all of these. So we knew that! Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Our problem was when the car was in a wreck and they replaced the front headlight they pinched the wire harness for the lights and over time it corrouted and caused a short which effected the dash lights and no rear lights

I had the same problem just after I finally found the fog lights. Not looking for the fog lights slowed the process down, of course.

Once I started using them, the Fog lights would come on by themselves and then not turn off. My solution was to pull the fuse for the fog Lights. On my '01 the only thing on that circuit is the for lights.

Well, I finally gave in and had my multi function switch replaced to the tune of $150.00. After about a week of leaving the left turn signal on after I exited the vehicle, it started to stay on again. It would go off if I applied pressure on the left turn signal lever, so I hooked a bungee cord to the lever and the seat frame and it would stay off. It took me 2 days to realize that this was a bizzarre and ridiculous solution. I feel that Chrysler should have replaced the switch at no cost to me, but you can guess what happened on that request. I recently replaced a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica with a 2008 Hyundai Sonata because of the bad gas mileage (12 MPG). My thought is that Chrysler should have paid for the replacement of the multi function switch on the Cruiser to keep the goodwill of their good customers, I don't think that Chrysler will be in business much longer (Daimler-Benz did a kiss off as I am doing) as their product is deteriorating. I won't buy another Chrysler product ever again.
