Got rid of the 2002 Cruiser That I had by newjew06

I started having the same problem that you guys are having. The problem started with the car doors locking and unlocking themselves. Eventually, the car wouldn't start. The PT only had about 73,000 miles on it. I had been raised around my dad working on cars, and I have a good understanding of mechanics. {I use to work in a factory running machinery, too. So....} Anyhow, due to unemployment status, I didn't have the money to waste on the problem.
I also am working hard on a college degree.

I know the starter was good, and I also replaced the battery. It didn't work! I also had to re-set the computer several times by taking out the #11 fuse from the fuse panel on quite a number of occassions. I also spoke with several mechanics about the issue--they were stumped too!

I bought the car used, and I also didn't have a warranty.
When I contacted a local dealer about the issue. I was informed to come in for a meeting with the main sales manager, the owner's son. Well, I wish I didn't do that!
The man told me that I needed to quit school, get a job, and get the car fixed!

Guess what?! I went to a local Ford dealership informed them of the issue, and I now have a brand new Ford Focus with a warranty. I like the car, and I hope it does last a while. It gets better gas mileage than the Cruiser did. The handling is superior quality too. The seat is a little uncomfortable, but the Focus makes up for it on road handling. It has a much quicker take off which has saved me quite a number of times on the highway when transfer trucks have changed lanes too soon behind me. Also, it brakes quite well for a car without ABS. I just miss the look of the PT. But, I don't think having that look is as important as having a car you feel you can trust and you feel safe in. I had become afraid that the PT would just shut off in the middle of the interstate with traffic behind me. I didn't feel safe in it any more.

But, I am disappointed with the PT issue. I always wanted one. I just didn't know that I would have this kind of trouble.

I say the PT Cruiser is a just like the Ford Pinto and the Chevrolet Vega.

I hope that you all have better luck than I did trying to figure out what is wrong.

Battery Cables Corroded by realleah

At 20,000 miles, you wouldn't think that could happen. We've cleaned it up a few times to get it this far. Defective battery cables or defective battery? it's in the shop, now. Wonder what the excuse will be?

2006 PT Limited Turbo starting problem by loreashlinn

My Cruiser is having a problem with starting sometimes, of course, never when you take it in for service. Sometimes, when you try to start it, it just won't turn over. All of the lights and guages respond, but no go! It's hard to describe, but the motor just doesn't crank. Anyone else with this problem? The last time I took it in, the service manager said that I had "a loose connection", SURE!

Hi, Yes! We have a PT Cruiser with the same problem. Did you ever get it fixed? Was the cause found?

Well, it's going to sound kind of silly, but I self-diagnosed the problem by thinking what was happening when it wouldn't start and haven't had the problem (knock on wood) for the past several months! On all of my other cars, when you turn the key, it never had to go so far back. But on my Cruiser, it takes a little more muscle with the key then I was used too! So, try turning the key with a little more aggression and see what happens. Now, I not saying try to break the key off, but turn your wrist a little more than normal! Looking back, it always happened when I was in a rush or upset about something.

PT Cruiser accelerator stuck by wallacer

Yesterday driving home, I thought that I could smell a faint odor of burning wires. I opened the hood and didn't see anything at that time. This morning when I started the car the accelerator raced to 3000RPMS and only slowed down slightly after warm. It's just as if I have my foot all the way down on the gas pedal. Even in neutral, the acceleration overrides the brakes.

Is there a fuser or switch, possibly for an automatic choke, that I should look to replace?

Any ideas what part I should be looking at?

Thanks for your help,
Wallace R

I have the 2003 Turbo, seldom used, with under 10,000 miles. Most of the time it's stored with occasional starting to keep the batter charged. A year ago began having intermitted starting problems, the dash lights come on normally and the turbo fan comes on but the engine won't turn over. If I keep turning the key off and on it usually starts after who knows, 3, 5, 10 times it depends. Sometimes it starts right away, I'd say this happens about every 2-3 starting attempts. It doesn't matter how long the car has run or how long it's been turned off, it will do it right away sometimes after I turn it off and on again. Sometimes it will have run for an hour, turn it off, it won't start. Other times it will. Dealer replaced the battery and the cables, fixed the problem for a couple of months now it's back. Replaced the battery again myself, no change. I've tried jiggling the key, no help. I'm at wits end and thinking of trading in. I've seen similar problems posted by others, can't believe there isn't a service bulletin out. Is the PT Cruiser just another American junk car, good on looks terrible under the hood?

I have a 2003 Pt cruiser with a little over 23000 miles on it garage kept. It has been to the chrysler dealer twice once under warranty and now out of warranty. It sound like it may be coming from around one of the belts. The first time they changed the thermostat and second put a new altenator on it. H
Just trying to see if anyone had anything smilar...it's kind of a high pitched sound.
