On a side note, my friends 08 recognizes some newer CDs that my 07 doesn't know... which causes me to use the MusicBox software to update the info online.

I'm wondering if the navi update would include a Gracenote DB update as well, or if Infiniti has anything in the works for the Gracenote DB at all.

Now that's a good question! Wish I had an answer... Maybe it's time to call ICA again...

Infiniti Nav System by askalan

I'm coming off a G35x 39 month lease that had a Nav system. It was a love/hate relationship from the start. It was DVD based, updated twice, and the never ending frustration of the lockouts has me questioning whether to go into another Infinit lease. I'm looking at the EX. Is the NAV system, with it's lockouts, still as frustrating as ever? Has anyone heard if Infiniti will unlock their NAV system for use while driving? Thanks, Alan

No Gracenote update as far as I can tell (had my nav update done last week). The same CDs that didn't identify before still don't identify.

NAV update is maps only which is both good and bad.

Good - didn't strip all the extra voice commands out of my 07 compared to what the 08 has

Bad - didn't update gracenotes and there are roads in a major city (dallas) that have existed for at least 5 years that still aren't on the maps.

Nissan North America (aka Infiniti) still has lockouts while moving on all their NAV systems. That said, you can search for a company called KP Technologies that will help with NAV menu lockouts. They do NOT do video bypasses.

Wow, I'm glad I started poking around here. I was close to springing for an '08 G35x lease, and this is the first I'm hearing about Nav lockouts!

Can you please list some of the specific things you can't do while moving?

This is an idiotic choice by Infinit. Thanks in advance.

I've owned a G35x with NAV, for 39 months . Aside from THE "PREMIUM" GAS YOU MUST USE, the NAV system was my biggest gripe.

Many other NAV systems have a disclaimer for use while driving. The Infiniti (Zenrin programmed) system simply does not care if you have another passenger. They have a disclaimer as well, then they lock you out of almost all usage while moving.

Pretty much all the functions are locked out or severely limited, in one way or the other, during any type of vehicle movement. If you have addresses saved, only the first few addresses wiill be available to you, during driving. The other addresses won't be avaialble unless you are ata a full stop.

During movement, one can't search for new routes, one can not search for a new address, (change your mind while on a highway, for example, to go somewhere else) or even search for an ATM or a gas station. You can't even start to your initial destination without having the GPS system programmed with your first destination IN FULL. What a pain.

One CAN check ones gas mileage while moving and one CAN get a detour route while driving, so I guess the idiots who programmed this system figured, if you are under stress because of bumper to bumper traffic, THEN IT IS OK to use the GPS system. Small minds.

I had my heart set on an Infiniti EX, when my lease is up in July, but I guess I'll look at the Acura series of cars. Their GPS system does not have any lockouts that I am aware of.

Good luck!

Askalan,

Thanks for the reply - it sure sounds like they have crippled the damn thing severely. Unbelieveable. This sure changes my thinking on the car. I don't want to depend on some after market device to bypass this, and to have to rip the unit apart to install it.

Don't forget the Music Box search is locked out too when you are moving, which really blows when on the highway. I don't even use the Music Box anymore but instead put all my music onto the Compact Flash card. This music box lockout kinda ruins the point of the damn thing when on a long family trip being able to search music and change it up.

None of these lockout issues are severe enough in my opinion to make me change my mind about how incredible the car is. I just did a 400-mile round trip and the car behaved flawlessly, including the nav system.
