#1 of 4 Blazer Liftgate Pops Open
by beherenow

97 Blazer, automatic,
Problem:
The liftgate frequently pops when shifting through reverse. This causes the interior lights to go on, and drains the battery within a few hours (if parked).
I started having problems last winter. I pulled the cover off the tailgate and lubed moving parts around the catch. Maybe I just need to spend more time doing this. This seems to fix it for a few weeks, than same problem all over again.
At this point I do not know if the problem is electrical or mechanical, although it seems to be mechanical.
I have used spray penetrating oil to try to clean the cable. Also used spray electrical contact cleaner as well as WD40.
I’m good at figuring things out, and following directions, but I’m no mechanic.

FUI:
I never had to fix this one but I would look at the dash switch and connections and the battery may not be caused by the switch but 97 (only) has a known ignition switch (thats the name but really the module in the column not the key tumbler) that causes all sorts of strange problems - most power is switched thru there. Hope that helps some.

Thanks.
I have found another sympton which is also a solution.
I live in a rural area and seldom lock the doors. I've found out since posting that if I lock the doors and liftgate, it doesn't pop. (I don't have to lock the driver's door.)I should have tried that before. This is a one owner vehicle and I'll be keeping it until it's ready for the boneyard, so I do want to get these little things fixed before they accumulate too much.
I'll be keeping the ignition switch/module in mind for other problems.
Thanks again.
