Tranny is a sealed unit. No dipstick. I have a 2002 Jetta automatic. At 77,000 miles the tranny went. Replaced with extended warranty. At 97,500 miles tranny went again (downshift problems again) replaced with extended warranty. At 97,510 miles tranny went again (same problem) YES THE MILEAGE IS CORRECT! I made it 10 miles out of the dealer. I think the torque converter went too this time. Loud crunch from tranny. I bought this car 3 years ago with 33,000 miles on it for $9,900. It has had $23,000 in warranty related repairs. It will be out of warranty in 2,500 miles. Downshift I'm screwed. Stay away from VW's!

No! Tranny is a sealed unit. No dipstick. I have a 2002 Jetta automatic. At 77,000 miles the tranny went. Replaced with extended warranty paying. Sounds like your Torque Converter is bad or your tranny computer.See if the fluid is burned. If it is put some tranny restore stuff in it and sell it. Don't let the buyer know wher you live. Stay away from VW's!

Change belt between 60-75K miles. be smart change water pump at the same time. Should run between 250-450 dollars for both.

My 1997 GLX also has only 65K and my mechanic thinks the transmission is going. I had to pay him $800 just to get the car current with its certification.

I was thinking of selling the car anyway, but now I don't know how to advertise it?

#167 of 389 Replace auto trans with manual? by btraven

May 09, 2009 (2:46 pm)

My mechanic thinks my automatic transmission is going, and I see from this forum that's a common problem, even when the car has low mileage. I just spent $800 on the car and could barely manage that. I'm a cyclist and don't need the car very often; I joined Zipcar too. Anyway, is it possible to replace the auto transmission with a manual transmission in a 1997 Jetta GLX?

it would be cheaper for you to just go buy another '97 Jetta with a stickshift. You can get a clean low mileage one for around $2500. By the time you buy a manual transmission, do the conversion work, scrounge up all the parts, and pay for a real expert to do it, you'd be way in the hole.
