Just for the record...I test drove ALL the cars in this class. Then the Mazda dealer called me to let me know they had a Mazdaspeed3 on the lot. So, I went and test drove it. OH MY GOSH!!! It killed all in its class! I was going to buy the GTI, but instead I bought a Mazdaspeed3 immediately after my test drive!! And loving it ever since!

Mazda Speed3 clutch pedal? by drumbira

Own a 2007 Speed3 and like the car alot.. Bought all season Mazda rubber mats to put over the cloth mats Mazda provides, for added protection. But it interfered with the clutch pedal, had to remove rubber mats to find out the pedal actually went into the carpet as well. Its not that big a deal, just felt different from my previous cars, otherwise the car is sweet, big jump up from my Honda Civic Si.Anyone else feel this???? Pulls strong without having to wail it up to 6100 to 8000 rpm all the time. I was going to supercharge the Si but felt the Speed3 was a better deal with the turbo and warranty. Doing any engine mods on the Si would void the warranty plus Honda would not be able to certify the car on a trade in nor would another dealer offer you what the car would been worth,it would not make the Speed3 power even with a supercharger.Si was a good car but the Speed3 is more fun!!!!!! i took the carpeted mats out and put in the all weather mats, properly securing the driver's front mat on the positive retaining hook.

fortunately, what happened occurred when i was changing from one limited access road to an interstate hwy.

pressing the acclerator all the way to the floor caused the aluminum pedal to get caught on the rubber all weather floor mat and not return. it was basically stuck at, let's say 90% or more of full throttle position!!!

in 4th gear at the time, i easily exceeded any posted speed limit, before switching off the engine, and loosing power assist on steering and braking, if i'm not mistaken!! but those weren't really needed at the time as there was not much traffic on the four lane interstate.

my first thought was that mat had come loose from the positive retention hook. reaching down, while coasting down to more permitted velocities with the gear selector in neutral, i was unable to move the mat back out of the way.

why? the mat WAS correctly positioned on the positive retention hook. unhooked the mat and slid it back out of the way.

solution: after returning home, the driver's mat was modified with a pair of utility shears to make sure that this wouldn't happen again.

my wife's '04 5dr has the similar all weather mats but no problem with the rubber pedals, just the Al sport pedals on the '07 MS3 GT with the rubber all weather mats.

don't know if this is just a tolerance mis-match on my car and mats, or if this is characteristic of any MS3 with all weather mats.

I'm sure mpg isn't a top priority for anyone that's purchased a turbo or supercharged 4 banger....but have any of you checked the mpg? I'm considering 2-2.4L T or S ...when they're driven normal most of the time ...MPG? Do they require premium?
