As for the U.S. Auto industry, I am going to petition the U.S. Government for the C.E.O. position in the new company I proposed. GM and Chrysler would go away as we know it. All Executive management would be changed out and a government oversight position would be installed to track metrics under the pay back plan.

I will use the bailout money to buy out workers that can not be part of the new company so they will have enough funds to re-train, including supplier companies that are affected by the massive changes I propose. The U.A.W. would go away under my plan as well as guaranteed pension costs and health care for retired since B.O. will fix health care in the U.S. While I rebuild the Auto Industry and Chevy and Cadillac would emerge when the smoke cleared as the twin divisions.

I do not expect any bonus to be paid until every cent of the loans from the Government are paid and profits EXCEED the industry benchmarks.

Market share would drop as production is reduced to dry up all of the excess capacity in the new/used market. After 3 years, no old platforms would exist as they are know today. Minimum efficiency specifications for both divisions would be 20 MPG City fuel economy and average would be 35 MPG COMBINED target 2011.

Chevy
Corvette
Camaro
Malibu
Caravan
Jeep - 4 variants
Tahoe
WOW (my pet economy car beating Civic price and Economy)

Cadillac
Alpha (3-Series Fighter with Economy, Mid-Level and High Performance)
Alpha CUV - Eldorado is the name for the alpha's
CTS - Would be changed to Electra
SRX - Changed to Park Avenue
DTS - Changed to DeVille
Escalade

Regards,
OW

Ok let's forget the politics of social security and focus on the cars most popular among retirees.

Coincidentally there is not a single German car among the top 20 list. It just proves to you that German cars attract people who are young in spirit. If I was a senior citizen I could not see myself in any of those autos on the top 20 lists. Not a single one. But then again never say never--who knows in a few decades that Cadillac DTS will look real desirable.

Toyota earnings are dropping like an anchor too. Fast dropping earnings is the general rule today in the auto industry independent of the car company.

Warren Buffett bought GS too early? Yup Warren Buffet is not perfect: Remember he's the same guy who recently bought a Cadillac DTS.

I have to ask my wife to prod her daughter as to the size of her husband's bonus.
He is a VP in the GS fixed income department. He can't be hurting too much since he is financing his wife's home renovation project to the tune of around $500k.

I don't mind taking one of those for free...

Well, not the one that's upside down though.

Let's see here... 20 Porsches destroyed... worth about $2million, depending upon which models.

"Not a single one."

We think alike.

A Lincoln Town car? Didn't Tony Soprano and his mob use those for body-dumping in the Jersey land-fills?

I walked away and retired 14 years before retiree medicare kicks in, so I guess I am not your typical retiree.

Before I retired, I drove a BMW to work, and since I retired-nothing but BMW's, except for a short Rabbit interlude.

Why on earth would I want to drive anything but a BMW?

Okay, since we have decided to get back to car talk, I'll take a stab at your last line - Why on earth would I want to drive anything but a BMW?

You and I both agree about the 3 series, it is best in class. An argument can be made that the 5 is best in class. I do not feel that the 7, X5, and Z4 are definitively best in their classes.

BMW has proven over time that they do a few things better than any other company, I hope that they have not streched too far over the past number of years by introducing so many new products in other categories. Many great companies have gotten a little bit over their heads in similar situations. Given the current global economy which will weed out the weak players, this will be a good test to BMW, and others, as to how well they can delight the customers in the markets that they want to win in.

Certainly you can break it down by class, but what if I'd rather drive a BMW M3 sedan more than an Audi A8? How about considering that I'm going to sell my Porsche 911 because the BMW 135i is simply more enjoyable to drive.

So... while your point is well-made and logical, I agree with hPowders. "Best" in class doesn't mean a car is necessarily the most preferred. Many people prefer the Z4, as an example, even though a Porsche might be best in class.

I really don't know what competes with the 135i, but it's more enjoyable to drive than most cars I've ever owned, regardless of price.

Frankly, if I only drive a BMW, I'd be just fine!
