As I understand it, the 3-Series steering is typical power steering... Unless the Active Steering option is ordered. It is rare to find Active Steering on a car in inventory. More typically it is custom ordered.

I have Active Steering. I absolutely love it, but do not recommend it for most folks.

I'd rather be in a slower Corvette than a faster GT-R. BTW, does Honda make that? Reminds of of the design of the new TL.

The adaptive steering on the VW will be perfect for the wife. She should bond with that car pretty quickly. She's lucky to get such a fine vehicle as her #1. She will quickly learn what separates German engineering from the rest, if and when she ever has to drive a Toyota or equivalent, as at the airport rental place.

Glad to see your wife has learned to appreciate BMW's.

3-Series steering by jlbl

The non adaptative steering of my '08 335d coupe is a delight to handle. Much better than that of my former '04 530d which in turn was not bad. The coupe eagerly aims glued to the pavement towards the point intended. Sport package is helping in that, no doubt. This surely is part of the 3-Series Bimmer legend, though I suspect top 1-Series cars belong in there as well.

Jose

I strongly advise you to take a test drive in a current 328i model; specify that you want one with Sport Package and do not want to drive one with adaptive steering. I think it will put a smile on your face, as will the feel and thickness of the wonderful sport steering wheel. Heaven!!!

Isn't that sport steering wheel a tactile treat? So delightfully meaty!

A message to all adversarial posters who wouldn't touch a BMW with a 10 foot poll:

Please do test drive a new 328i with sport package and find out what the rest of us (jimbres, dewey, tagman, Jose, and I, among others)) already know. The steering wheel alone is to die for, as jimbres says.

Isn't it always best to experience what a vehicle is like for yourself rather than blindly criticize out of ignorance and irrational pre-conceived notions?

That way if you don't like a BMW vehicle, you can defend your position from a position of intellectual honesty. You'll feel better for it and I for one would find it quite refreshing.

bought a new truck originally priced over $30K for $18K. Brand new, full warranty. And loaded

Which truck are you talkin about? Ford? GMC?

Is the inline 6 a better choice or the x6 v8?

That's certainly your wife's choice but I must say the MB CLK has never interested me and with the new Audi A5/S5 and BMW coupe my interest has declined even further.

I agree. Those peanut headlights on the CLK look absolutely ancient these days, and the mechanicals are last gen C-class I believe, not exactly state of the art. The electronics of course are also seriously out of date. Unless you simply must have a Benz for whatever reason, there are much better choices.

My dealer said the Q5 will have a nice smooth ride. Safety will be amongst the best, Audi's are solid. Will crush it's class honestly, Audi has reasonable prices and more bang for the buck compared to Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. I think its going up against the GLK, X3, and RX?

I'm betting the Q5 is going to be good. The only engine choice (at least until a possible diesel appears) will be the 3.1L FSI, which in Q5 guise produces 270hp, more than plenty for her. My wife thinks the X3's ride is a bit too hard, the steering is too heavy, the brakes are too grabby, and the transmission is too dimwitted (but other than that its great!), but even she thought the RX300 was a bit too wobbly and dull, so I don't think we want to go back that far in the other direction. The Q5 with ADS will have comfort mode for her, and dynamic mode for me.

The compact lux ute market is heating up with a lot of competitors now. When we leased the X3, the only two other choices were bad ones - Acura RDX or Land Rover LR2. Now there's also the Infiniti EX35, Benz GLK, and Volvo XC60, but I don't think any are near as good as the Q5.

The RX has grown out of the 180" compact segment where it started. Currently its around 186, and the next one will be nearly 190, firmly in mid-size.

I had this same recent revelation. $162 for ten miles over the limit; then I'll get the increased insurance costs; why have a quick car if you can't utilize its capability?

Ouch, that's brutal. Fortunately most PA cops are more reasonable than that, you have to be at least 13 or so over for them to notice you.
