Article comments for Follow-Up Test: 2006 Chevrolet Malibu SS - If you're expecting a modern Malibu SS to have a 427 or even a 350 V8, you're living in a time warp. V6s are the new V8s, and the '06 Malibu SS has a decent V6. (more)

I enjoyed the SS article and it covered a lot of interesting points. Thanks!

Hopefully in future Edmunds can do a short test of the Maxx SS to see how it compares to the Malibu SS. The Maxx version appears to have a wider final drive ratio, suggesting it will burn rubber easier at the expense of using more gas.

It would also have been useful to highlight some more differences of the SS versions from the regular models (wider turning circles, all black interiors, etc.). For me the all black interior's a deal breaker (it's no fun to fry in Calif. summers and clean plastic out-gassing from windows all the time! ).

Looks really good, but I see it accelerating from 0-60 a lot faster than 7.9. The regular Malibu has been clocked everywhere from 7.6-8.1 and I'm pretty sure 240hp would be faster than 200hp in the same car with steeper gearing.

every road test that i read about, malibu SS does 0-60 in 6.9-7.1 seconds, 7.8 is more for the standard V6. and why is it that almost every single road test video on edmunds is wrong about the acceleration times?

Am wondering how this SS Malibu compared to the other current "Bu's" wrt fuel economy.

I've noted the EPA ratings on the SS versions are much lower than the regular V6's, which is odd as the HP difference between these cars is not all that great (217 .vs. 240).
My guess is the transmission gearing on the SS is much shorter (on the Maxx version, it doesn't seem suited for highway driving).

Regular Malibu power steering is electric while the SS has Hydraulic. The SS also wears P225/60-18's vs. P215/60-16's.

I own a 2006 Malibu SS. I can tell you that it is a great looking car. I can also tell you that it will be my LAST G.M. vehicle. The constant problems that I have had with my front end are beyond ridiculous. I have had 5 sets of tie rod ends put on in 34000 miles. And this is just the tip of the iceburg. (2 rack and pinions also) I have not had any help from any dealership or G.M.
