Article comments for Perception Is Reality - Witness the tale of two companies — Toyota and General Motors. Despite recalls and public relations woes, Toyota's image of bulletproof quality persists, and sales and market share rise. No offense taken. I think unions are a fair and decent idea. Especially when given the times they were created in. Employers should not be allowed to earn record profit on the blood and sweat of their employees without fair and reasonable compensation. Its just that the realities of the 20's through the 50's are long gone. Businesses cannot realistically fund pension plans for workers who live 10 to 15 years longer (if not more) that they did early last century. Add costs of simply doing business and unions who give up ground like the airborne at bastone and you have a situation where the greatest costs of doing business are not easily remeadied. Chain saw Al, while unpopular with employees did realize that the largest cost cuts you can make in a business are with personal.

If your GM or Ford and you can recover those costs it will: A raise your bottom line, B make your investors happy C trim excess manufacturing forcing development of product that exceeds expectations because you must focus on quality over quantity.

I still think the current trade laws or "free market" is the biggest obstacle for union and company.

Sometimes I think the Big 2.5 use unions the way Castro uses the US to blame someone for all his troubles....do you really think if unions just disbanded one morning at Ford Chrysler and GM that suddenly they would be building Toyotas----as if the mentality and management at the top had nothing to do with their problems?

One has to wonder. We've all seen the Big 2.5 shoot themselves in the foot so many times, making it difficult to simply blame the unions for the automakers' troubles. Unions might definitely affect profit margins but not bad designs and not quality issues....any basically intelligent person can be taught to build a good car. I mean, Cadillac was training under-educated women from the poorest white and black neighborhoods in Detroit to build bomb sights in World War II, and they did a great job, too. How did they do it? Great leadership from the top, great teaching tools, and a very clear goal and mission. The work force and management were on the same page, to mutual benefit.

Somehow this has to happen again, and fast.

my take on the 'domestic' manufacturers is that there are several financial pressure points, which lead them to cut costs on parts. this can lead to parts suppliers cutting corners.
the whole divesture of delphi/visteon was a scam that was destined to fail.
i still prefer to buy a 'domestic' vehicle.

What I find funny is that resale value is shaped more often by non-dealer used car sale prices. And yet, it seems as though people are trying to phase that out entirely, encouraging trade-ins or even car leasing as opposed to taking it to a dealer to sell back. Granted, I've seen it go the other way too, but I just find it all very interesting. I supposed that this dynamic, shifting one way or the other, has to do with the amount of effort required to sell a vehicle as opposed to the amount of money the seller stands to gain from not trading it in.
