Article comments for Perception Is Reality - Witness the tale of two companies — Toyota and General Motors. Despite recalls and public relations woes, Toyota's image of bulletproof quality persists, and sales and market share rise. Despite concrete evidence to the contrary, GM's reputation for inferior quality remains, while sales and market share decline. (more)

The Odyssey was an undeniable smash hit for Honda. Problems or not, there were people waiting MONTHS to pay OVER MSRP for them. Honda also addressed the problems (with the power doors and transmission), quickly and efficiently, offering a 100k warranty on the recalled parts. I think everyone makes mistakes... it's how FREQUENTLY you do and how you respond to them that makes the difference. Personally I think Unions have almost singlehandedly killed the US car manufacturing industry. You can relate almost every problem ("legacy" costs, quality control, red tape, overspending etc..) back to the Union. The drunken forklift driver story made me laugh. I remember hearing stories like that all the time from my uncle who lived in Flint (I grew up in Detroit). It's sad, but no small wonder when you consider what GM's "legacy costs" are rising to these days. T |

Anyway, like carguy posted earlier, the Mazda Protege (323) and Mazda6 are excellent cars with great quality, fit & finish. The only reason I know of that Mazda got a bad name is due to the Mazda626 - onto which the parent FORD forced it's (ford) automatic transmission which was a big failure. Other than that, the Mazdas have had great quality, in as much that FORD realized its folly and instead made Mazda design responsible for all car and small engine development center. The new Mazda3's platform is shared by VolvoS40, and the Mazda6 platform is now used by the ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr. The duratec V6 that is used in the Mazda6 has been consistently spoken of by testers as a better engine for smooth revving performance compared to the Jaguar Duratec 3.0V6. AS somebody remarked on the relationship of Ford and Mazda, "The Teacher is learning from the Student".

A village idiot with TWO badges couldn't stop that 3.5 from running either It's a flawed example because governments choose the Domestics BECAUSE they're Domestics, not because they're the superior car. If they spent our hard earned American tax dollars on a JAPANESE car we'd never hear the end of it lol.." As I work on Toyotas and Hondas as well as domestics, I form my own opinions on durability. I replace most of the same parts on all vehicles at the same milage regardles of the brands, but other than body shop cars sent to me for alignment, I seldom work on cars still in warranty. Therefore I am not expert in initial minor problems. Most imports, especially Japanese, from body shops suffer more extensive/expensive damage than comparable sized domestics when abused by stupid driving. The idiot driving may not kill that 3.5, but what would idling all day running RADAR do to it? Harry |

There are a lot of Impalas bought strictly because of price. I really like my Impala, but I am 5' 9' tall and weigh 165 #. Here in Illinois, a common problem with the Ford 4.6L is the studs that hold the exhause manifolds to the heads rust off in a couple years, and ignition coils are frequently failing. These two problems cause repair cost to be higher than the Impala. The Intrepids are so hard to work on that labor runs the maintenance price way up. Harry
