Follow-Up Test: 2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata PRHT - After putting a quick thousand miles on a 2007 Mazda MX-5 Power Retractable Hardtop (PRHT), we think the company's estimate of a 20-30-percent take rate on this option is going to prove low (more)

Bought a 2007 Grand Touring Galaxy Gray PRHT MX5 in July. Paid slightly under sticker. Got 6 sp auto, Bose, ground effects, whole nine yards. Only one in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but still no premium added to price. Great car! Can't drive it enough!

Congrats. I'm surprised the dealer didn't hold out for full sticker given demand is greater than supply!

Lucky you! Does the PRHT work as effortlessly as the video clips show? I have a 2008 on order, not here until Feb 08. Couldn't find an 08 anywhere so have to wait 6 months.

I bought a 2007 PRHT GT at the end of May 07. The dealing was asking for a premium, but after I made it clear I wouldn't pay it, we settled for a 1k over invoice. The car was fully loaded with appearance pkg in and out. You need to let the dealer know that you are serious buyer and that you will go to another dealer. I live in Colorado and had a number of dealers to work with.

Nice car, for a teenage girl by 6sptl

Why anyone with any sporting pretensions would buy a miata is beyond me when there a superbly higher performing convertible (the Honda s2000) is available for a couple more K. The S will simply trounce the Miata (not to mention the Boxster) in every performance category for very little additional money. Plus it is exponentially better looking. Also note that the S 2000's soft top will deploy and stow in 4seconds without taking up the entire trunk in the process. The miata's interior are a smorgasboard of tawdry, hard, cheap plastic. In all the miata is little more than a well screwed together solstice. Why anyone but a college girl would choose a miata over an s2000 is a complete mystery, My guess is that most people think that s2000 costs a lot more than a miata, it should, but it doesn't.

You have obviously never owned an MX-5. Enough said.

LOL, I'm pricing a Sport model with incentives and the street price is around $19.1k.

S2000 costs, what, $34 grand? Over $30k I'm sure.

You must be joking.

Next topic: Acura's TL vs. the Mazda3 sedan.

Sound absurd? Exactly.

A fully loaded MX5 with traction control and folding hardtop lists for $30,505.
The S2000 is 4K more (13%). Thus the difference in price is negligible. The MX 5 starts at 21 but essentially no one buys or sells the stripper model. Thus for a little more cash you get a whole lot more sport car.

But the S2000 doesn't have a folding hard top!

Fitzmall.com has a Miata in stock for $21.5k, more than $10 grand less than an S2000. The most expensive one they have is a Grand Touring PRHT and it costs $27,915, no-haggle priced, and those prices include freight.

Tell me where I can find an S2k new for $20-28 grand new and I'll buy one.

The most you can spend there on a soft top, comparable to the S2k, is $26k. So we're talking about a pretty big spread, and the Miata would still have more equipment.

The S2000 is a wonderful car, but it's equipped with only the basics, no frills, so comparing to a loaded power folding hard top comptetitor is pointless.

There's no way, no how, these cars are in the same price territory. You say 4k more but it's more like 8k more even with a better equipped Miata.

If people want a folding hardtop, then they want a folding hardtop. I suggest comparing a Benz SLK.

Lets not compare the MX-5 PRHT to a S2000, because the soon to be discontinued S2000 does not come in a power hard top version. There is a "removable hard top" in the S2000 CR, and that is $36,000. It's an overpriced S2000 with no extra performance.

To be fair, which you are not doing, we should compare the MX-5 grand Touring soft top to the S2000. Sound fair? With the MX-5 GT, you get leather, heated seats, Bose Audio System, ABS, side impact air bags 166hp 2.0L and a 6-speed manual for a starting MSRP of $27,410. You can add a suspension package (Bilstein Shocks and a LDS) for $500, and there is a Premium Package (anti-theft alarm, DSC / TCS, Xenon headlights and keyless ignition) for $1,250. If you get one loaded to the gills, which no one really does, the price is $29,160. Most people buy a GT with the suspension package.

A S2000 is $34,935. Add an alarm (for a apples to apples comparo) and you are at $35,342.

Now, the S2000 is more then $6,000 more then the MX-5 and it is missing side impact airbags and there is no keyless ignition. While the S2000 boasts more HP and TQ, it also drinks more gas and requires Premium.

So, I ask you, does the S2000 warrant an extra $6000 for an extra 71hp and 12lb-ft of tq? I doubt it. How about the S2000's 1990's out of date styling? Outdated interior with more plastic then a MX-5? It does not handle that much better, and only when you are revving the engine near 7,000 rpm's do you get any power. That's VTEC for you....

You know what, lets forget your opinion, lets let the sales numbers do the talking. The MX-5 is the best selling roadster of all time. So far, YTD sales for the MX-5 were 4,685 through April 2008, while the S2000 was at 1,130 for the same period. If the S2000 is such a superior car, then why does it not sell? It's because it is overpriced and outdated. While I do think the S2000 is a great car, your comparison is unfair.

Here is some advise for you. Before you come into a MX-5 forum and bash a car you know nothing about, please do some homework and don't insult the MX-5 owners or enthusiasts. The MX-5 is the best selling roadster for a reason, just as the S2000 is soon to be discontinued for a reason.
