Tough call. I said to hell with it and bought a new 2013 instead:)
Ok, really. I had a very nice Garmin with the car before my 2011 Avalon, and must admit, I often used both units. The Garmin (which I had lifetime Map updates), was as you'd expect always right on the money. More so as of late (which is why the Toyota unit has a New DVD available).
Is it worth $169.00 to not get lost É you'll have to make that call?
Is it worth NOT having a usable Nav that you paid dearly for É you'll have to make that call?
Is it worth looking at a nice Garmin and getting lifetime map updates and never have to worry about this again É you'll need to make that call.
In a perfect world, Toyota would contract with someone like Garmin and allow for "Lifetime Map updates" and:
- Being able to create a route on the desktop computer / ipad or whatever, and then be able to email to the car
- Be able to move about the screen better, and change routes with greater easy. Touch on the new road you want to be on, and have it take you there.
Now the 2013 does have something I didn't see and my 2011, which is POI show up and you can select one and say go there and it puts it into the system. A pretty cool feature, that is a way I used to get back on track once so far.

Had a email response from the Toy. parts dept. regarding the 12.1 nav. disk update for a 2011AV compared to the 10.1 orginal. "Easier re-routing, 42 new counties added, updated coverage Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and about 200K miles of newly verified roads". So my decision whether to update to 12.1 is not easier. I have a old Navcon GPS which is easier to program and can take in any vehicle.

I always goolgle my directions with print out just in case you hit a dead zone with the nav. happen a couple of times not very fun..
#431 of 461 Nav DVD 12.1 Gen 6 part number?
Dec 14, 2012 (6:31 am)
I want to upgrade the DVD in my 2011 Avalon and Sienna to 12.1 There are two different part numbers - 86271-73013 and 86271-73014. What is the difference? Will both work for both cars? Is there a preference? How do I determine which one to get?
Nav model in the Sienna is E7027 and in the Avalon it is E7031.

Hope some '11 Avalon owner has updated to the 12.1 disc and can relate if the updated disc improves the nav. system to justify the expense. The Toyota dealer I spoke to has the specs for the updated 12.1 disc for the particular Toyota vehicles.

Navigation for my 2011 AV is 10.1 disc. Can't understand why so few established cross streets (roads) are shown as lines but not named. Always identifies name of street road being traveled but not intersecting streets etc. My 4 year old portable Navagon does much better on intersecting streets. I would upgrade the disc. to 12.1 if I knew more intersecting streets (roads) are identified. Still hope as in previous post to learn from a user the changes made in the 12.1 disc.
#434 of 461 Avalon JBL Radio

Does anyone know if the 2012 Limited with Navi shows info on songs that are playing like my 07 Accord in XM mode? Also, I drove a 2012 Limited today and the JBL system does not seem to sound as good as my Honda EX-L system (07). Would like to hear from Avalon owners out there on what they think of the JBL system in the Avalon.

I just bought a 2013 Avalon Limited (less than 300 miles) and am curious if the problems I am experiencing are limited to my particular car or if anyone else has the same problems.
Upon pairing my iPhone to the car's entertainment system, many things started happening. First, the system played what I wanted it to from the iPhone. Then, right in the middle of listening to my calming music at the volume level I wanted, another song from a totally different genre of music started playing at a much higher volume level. I had no idea where it came from, and it took quite a bit of fiddling to get it to revert to what I was listening to.
Then, it arbitrarily went to the Settings screen. I did not tell it to do that. I got that turned off, and then it went back to my music. Then the map screen came on. I got that turned off and it reverted to my desired music.
Then the loud music came back on. I got that turned back off and the same cycle started all over again. I had not touched anything to make all this happen.
There are many more details, but that the gist of the situation.
Has anyone experienced the same, or reasonably similar, situation with the 2013 Avalon Limited?
