#378 of 447 2007 DVD version help by getst8frm

Aug 12, 2010 (5:51 pm)

I'm new here & need help. My 07 Avalon limited navigation software is terrible. Can anyone tell me:
1) What generation navigation head unit I have? I have the OEM factory unit.
2) What is the latest version DVD that Toyota sells that will work in my unit?
3) Is the new software version worth the cost? Or is it still as bad? Any alternatives?

I had someone tell me that there are multiple generations of software out there, and that if I don't get the exact one for my 2007 Avalon Limited, it will not work, and my old software DVD can't be re-installed. Any of this true? please feel free to expand on your answers, I know nothing on this topic. Very much thanks for your help!!!

Welcome...Please refer to my posts #212,213 and 293. Also see post 304.

From what I understand, the update DVD will only update the maps, not the software so the system will continue to operate in the same inferior manner regardless..

I would save my money regarding an update.'
Alternatives... live with it or get a good Garmin unit. The cost is not much different! I use the old map and it is usually reasonably accurate. The routings sometimes are lacking but are not that critical to me in most cases.

Good luck!!

My Avalon navigation device rejected an updated DVD that I tried to install. It would then not accept the re-installation of the original DVD that came with the car. Any advice would be appreciated,

#381 of 447 2006 Avalon with v5.1 by toynota

I just purchased a certified 06 Avalon yesterday, gosh I wish I found this blog before buying. After 1 day I already realize the navigation system is horrible. My system has version 5.1, which has very few PIO's, is this normal? If I upgrade to v8.1, will it have more PIO's? Does anyone know where to purchase reliable newer versions? I may just take the car back to the dealer tomorrow and exercise the 3-day return policy. I bought this model because it had navigation, very disappointed. I was supposed to be excited and happy about my new car, not feeling regret. THe car rides nicely though.

I gave up and bought a Garmin gps navigator for $400. It works very well and I can download map updates for free. I agree, the car rides very well, no problems after seven years.

#384 of 447 2011 Nav Question by robsis

Nov 14, 2010 (7:38 am)

My wife just got a 2011 Ltd with the new Nav. It seems much better than the old one from the 06-10; however, while reading the manual, it appears that it does not automatically re-calculate when you either miss your turn or are forced off of your route. It appears as if you need to manually tell it to re-route...does this sound right? Last night, she said she was testing it and was forced, by construction, to go another way. The Nav went silent until she found her way back to the originally calculated route. I saw nothing in the manual stating that it re-calcs like many of the portable navs (we have a Garmin and Tom Tom, both of which re-calc the route automatically...).

Does this sound right or am I missing something?

Full disclosure....I haven't tested it at all, yet, as I can't get the car away from her She absolutely loves driving it!

Well, for those who were curious, the new NAV does not automatically re-calc your route...you have to tell it to. You go to Route/Detour/then you can calculate a detour OR tell it to re-calc the route completely. I like the units that re-calc for you; however, I can live with it.

#387 of 447 2011 Avalon Nav System HELP by grandday

Can someone help me with this please. I set my destination or POI - when traveling by freeway the voice command instructs me to exit at each 'exit' and then will instruct to turn L or R, however that is not even my destination. I read the manual and it said on freeway driving a dual screen appears at each exit but the system tells you to exit. I want it to stay on a single screen with my route displayed, not all these exits. So confusing.
