Hello, I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 W 5.9 gas engine. I have been dealing with this problem for over a year now. MIL light is on for code p0720 which is Output speed sensor, replaced it still have problem. The issue is when I am in 4 wheel with a load on it ( pushing through deep snow) it will sometime shudder hard and than stall out kinda feels like a torque converter locking up. At the same time the speedo will go crazy and jump around, even when truck is not moving. Had a brainstorm and checked VSS. Reference voltage is low should be 8 volt it's only 5.5 volts. So my question is, could it possibly be the VSS? Any help is appreciated I live in SD and soon will be up to my ears in snow! |

| What would cause my 1999 2500 4wd cummins OD to not engage/disengage properly? Pressing the OD Off button takes multiple attempts before engaging and disengaging. Also, for the time being, is there a problem driving with the OD engaged all the time? Thanks! | |

I have a 06' 1500 V6 with a 6 speed(G238) manual transmission. It has 49k miles and it seems like its harder to engage in gears especially down shifting to 1st and 2nd second. General maintenance books(that I found) say that its probably the fluid. My owners manual says "this transmission is filled with manual transmission fluid at the factory. This fluid does not require periodic changing." I don't get it. It says the 2500/3500 models need to change the fluid but doesn't have this trans in the maintenance schedule. |

1999 Dodge 2500 quad cab 116,000 miles with a shortbox. 5.9 v8 116,000 miles on it. My transmission just started to act up. It slips out of overdrive after about 25 minutes of driving, then about 10 minutes later, my transmission temp. light comes on. Then I pulled over and let it cool off and the truck ran for another 20 minutes or so and then same thing. It runs good shifts good.Is my tranny going? I took it it a shop and they quickly told me I need it rebuilt. $1800 I really don't have $1800 right now. Would installing a tranny cooler help this problem? Any other suggestions. I asked the guy if changing or flushing the fluid and filters in it would help and he said no. I did notice there was no other customers in his shop.I was reccomended to this tranny place but have a bad feeling that he needs my business..

The tranny was rebuilt prior to my buying the truck. One night the truck went completely out of gear. I glided to a stop and could not get the truck into a gear to stay. The truck goes in gear when cold until it gets hot and then nothing, just revs up, doesn't move. Under the hood says the engine is a 42 RE, 3.9 liter automatic. What could this be if the tranny was rebuilt? Was told by mechanic over the phone he didn't think it was the torque converter. Said might be the clutches. How do I know? Any help would be appreciated. |

| I have a 2000 Ram 1500 with 5.2 V-8 and the 46RE trans. Two months ago I got code P1764 that said 'Governor Pressure Sensor Voltage Too Low". I replaced the governor and the transducer solenoid both. The engine light turned off and then came on about 5 minutes into driving. Then Dodge said to replace the Transmission Relay, did that, light turned off for about 5 mins again and then came back on. I took it to the dealer and a tranny tech hooked his computer up to it and we did a road test. He said the governor voltage is supposed to fluctuate up and down as your RPMs go up and down. Mine stayed at 0 the entire time and only showed voltage once for about three seconds while driving. They said to replace the Transmission Override Solenoid next. He said he's never seen the voltage stay at 0 before and that the problem is either the Trans Ovrrde Solenoid or the wiring to it, OR the computer. Has anyone seen this or had this happen before??? Or am I doomed to keep throwing money at it by replacing part after part?? | |

I have an '01 Dodge 1500 4x4 with a 360,46RE and NP231, 4.88 gears and 38" tires . My question is, will a 727 or 904 tranny bolt up to a 360 magnum motor and NP231 without too many mods. I cracked the case of my 46RE, and from what I read they're a piece of crap. Is it worth it to put the 3 speed in it, or $2400 for a replacement? If the 231 won't work which transfer case would be a good choice? It sees alot of mud, trails and some road driving. Some help would be greatly appreciated. jhight420 |

Replying to: bobk9 (Aug 29, 2009 10:58 pm) Turns out the problem was not my tranny at all, but a completely broken and clogged up catalytic converter. That would explain the "rocks in a can" sound that I kept hearing. The cat was so blocked that it was restricting the exhaust and causing power loss and erractic shifting of the tranny. After picking up my California Cat on order from the local part store, I drove to a muffler shop to have it welded on. The sound from the old cat had stopped it was so glogged. Hope this helps, FYI |
