I have a 2002 VW Jetta. Whenever I slow down e.g. approach traffic lights, my engine just completely cuts out. It starts again with no problem. I’ve had the car for about 10 years. Lately, this used to happen about once a month but it now happens more often. The other day it cut out six times in the space of 10 minutes! Can any mechanics or people who know about cars out there give me some suggestions as to what the problem might be?
 
My uncle has driven the car on road trips from Connecticut to Boston without any problems and has never faced this issue, it only happens to me. Could I be slamming on the brakes too abruptly or confusing the car?

Without physically inspecting the car, diagnosis is difficult.
 
MAF or ECT may be suspect.
 
MAF = Mass AirFlow sensor
ECT = Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.

Hi there, me and my hubby worked on our jetta for almost a week now trying to figure out why it was overheating.First we replaced some hoses/connectors, then the heater core, then the thermostat, and last but not least the water pump... which was a total b***h to get to! We did remove the timing belt and made sure not to move any pulleys out of place to knock the timing off and after successfully replacing the water pump, we put it all back together to only discover that now the car wont even turn over! What else could have possilby went wrong(was going throught our heads/thoughts of blowing it up!) Well needless to say we called our mechanic told him what we had repaired and he says we bent the valves because of the possibility the timing was knocked off and tryin to crank the car trashed the engine...but doesnt make sense because the pulleys and crankshaft arent even turning when we try to crank the car... can anyone give us some advice or possibly know any other reason the car isnt starting up? please we need your help!

Replacing waterpump should be INCLUDED when the TimingBelt (TB) is replaced. (I personally use waterpump with BRASS impeller...not the cheap plastic ones) Also replace ALL the idler-pullies and tensionor-pullies.
 
I agree with the mechanic... It is very likely that the TB is off by a tooth which can really mess up the engine. (bent valves...etc) You may get lucky and after re-timing the TB, your engine will be OK.
 
I am concerned that you suggest that the pullies and TB are not even moving when you crank the engine... this is IMPOSSIBLE!! (The crankshaft pulley *is* the engine)
 
As for the 'overheating' issue - did you perform a bleeddown test? This would tell you the condition of the head-gaskets. Leaking head-gasket can cause overheating.

Wow, you do have some good pointers there and me and my hubby did consider replacing some other parts but not until be figure out if the engine itself is worth saving. We did have a mobile machanic come look at it yesterday and he was stumped after adjusting the timing a little, checking the compression (which was good) and still couldnt get the car to start. We did have some fuel hoses that were worn but were able to salvage enought to try and see if that was the problem but still no luck.. Mechanic says the same thing we did, the car just isnt getting power like it should. Just dont know what the factor to this is! We've checked the spark wires/plugs, battery, alternator, starter,distributor cap, all fuses, relays, dont know what else to check.... were running out of ideas annd unfortunately taking it to a VW speacialist is just not in our budget right now. My husband messes with it everyday trying new things but nothing has happened yet..thanks for your help

Its been going off everytime we try to start up the car, even though the car doesnt start up the alarm goes off every 3 our of 5 times you try to start up the car... this is really odd and we dont know how to get the alarm to cut off permanently so we can work on the car! IF any knows how to locate the alram system on my car please let me know thanks

If fuel-pump is not running, engine will behave as you mention. I dont know how the fuel-pump would suddenly quit but there is a "fuel pump relay" and a fuse.
 
When you initially turn the key to ON (before cranking engine) you should hear the fuel-pump run for a few seconds.. .it is mounted INSIDE the gastank and sounds sorta like a 'rumble' near the rear of the vehicle.

Certainly the ECU (Engine Control Unit) can be your culprit.... but how in the world would it go bad all by itself whilst the waterpump was replaced?

OK - so you think this is a no air or no fuel problem, most likely no fuel... After driving diesels for years, I agree. It is an intermittent problem and the dealer cannot get it to repeat - mostly because they will not repeat the scenario I have told them to use enough times to get it to happen. How do I get the dealer to move forward and FIX this?? They say they "cannot put any more time into it" and refuse to "throw parts at a car" but this is dangerous. If the hesitation occurs mid-shift, the car stalls, and has stalled in an intersection twice. If it hesitates once in gear, because it is a manual trans, it just hiccups and keeps going. I am being stonewalled by the dealer and by VW USA. Need help!!
