#209 of 266 2012 Jetta TDI problems
by jdholt22

I just bought a new 2012 Jetta TDI and i had it 10 days before the ECM went out. After 4 days of being in the shop waiting on the part, they fixed it and also did a recall on the car and fixed the window switch. Picked it up Friday night and Saturday night the engine wouldn't start again. I tried several times and thought it would have to be towed again. I waited 15 minutes and tried turning the key back and forth in the ignition cylinder and it seemed to reset the onboard computer to allow it to start and not show the service engine soon light. It is running a little rough. Has anyone else had this problem?

My Jetta used to stall such as above and also hesitated. Ignition coils was my culprit.

Mr smithap - A diesel engine does not have ignitors. It is a compression-ignition engine.
Since there is no ignition-system on a diesel engine, there is only 2 ways it can 'stall'
1) No air
2) No fuel
To lose air, since there is no throttlebody, the only way that can happen is if the overrun-protector somehow closes.
To lose fuel, there are several ways this can happen and is most likely the reason a diesel engine stalls out.
Using logic, I have pretty much narrowed down the problem.

My 1999.5 jetta with a 191,000 miles on it 2.0L started acting up. The light for the temp will go on the code came back with a problem with the cooling system when on the freeway the engine will begin to cool and the beeping will start over again witch i find strange cuz ive never had a car begin to cool down while on the freeway and its already warmed up all the way. Today before i went to school the car would start and turn off right away so i started it up again and reved it up till it stayed on but the rpm needle was bouncing like it wanted to turn off again any ideas on what it could be? My chk engine light also came on yesterday auto zone said the code came back for a pedal positioning sensor but idk . car has also been feeling heavy when driving, when i let go of the gas a bit and reapply pressure it jolts forward and when im in 3rd geer and the rpm is under 2000 it feels like it struggles to gain speed.

Your 1999.5 was KNOWN for having a faulty coolant-temperature-sensor (CTS). In fact VW changed the design of it to be more reliable.
The CTS on the 2.0L engine is VERY easy to change. First, you should open the hood and look at it. The new-improved one is GREEEN. If yours is not green, then replace it.
It is trivial to replace, I changed the CTS on my daughters 2001 2.0L in the dark while she held a flashlight. It took about 10 minutes.
The CTS is under $20 including O-ring and spare clip (incase you break the existing one)
Of course, troubleshooting a problem online has inherent inaccuracies. Your problem may be something else.
#215 of 266 2008 Wolfsburg Jetta, concerned about the hesitation when starting it....

Hi all, I'm new to this site and new to owning a Jetta. I bought it a week ago and am very concerned (especially after reading some of the posts) about the hesitation when I'm trying to start the car. It usually happens in the morning when I am going to work and in the afternoon when I start it up to come home from work. Sometimes it gives out completely and I have to restart it. It's usually fine after the second start. It's a automatic with the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) although I don't have much trouble once it's started, I have noticed when I put it in reverse, and take my foot of the break, there is a couple second delay before it starts moving.
At this point, I'm wondering if I should just have the dealer buy the car back. I LOVE it otherwise and am so disappointed I'm having these issues but am worried about it leaving me sitting. Is this going to be one of those situations that I'm constantly having to get the car looked at, worked on, etc.? Suggestions, feedback, advice? Thanks so much!!!

Ok I have decided to let you know what has happened. I chickened out with cleaning the mass air flow sensor.....got really worried that I may damage the piece. But what I did do that weekend was replace the engine air filter and added a bottle of fuel system cleaner. And the crazy thing is for almost a month I had no problems at all with starting up the car. But alas, it has started to act up again. Now it's not happening as much as it did before but I have a thought that it will start to become a daily occurrence again. After doing some more reading I'm thinking maybe the problem is something with the fuel intake or whatever it is that regulates the fuel upon startup of the car? Also that fuel system cleaner did improve my gas mileage noticably. Strange that after start up the car drives like a dream. If only I could figure out the starting problem.

The fact that adding "fuel system cleaner" resulted in such a big difference in the way your 2002 2.0L runs indicates that your fuel-injectors may have been getting plugged up. (Just imagine how many gallons of gasoline have passed thru those tiny pinholes.)
It would not hurt to try another treatment to see if you get any more improvement.
Also, did you clean the snowscreen? (I clean mine annually and it is pretty plugged each time)
