Window Shattering: Vandalism or Spontaneous by jayemmay

The other night, when I left a store at a small strip mall, I found the rear window of my Nissan Maxima shattered. I felt sick of course. I supposed the damage was due to vandalism. I called the police who came a took pictures and a report.

The car is being repaired under the comprehensive part of my car insurance. The question that has been nagging me is whether the damage was vandalism or could it have been spontaneous, say because of a glass defect. And if it is possible, how does one tell the difference when examining the damage.

All I know about car glass, is that the windshield is laminated glass, but the rear window is tempered glass.

Anything stolen? how about other cars beside yours, are theirs broken too? My younger cousin used to played with the lil porcelain part of a spark plug, once that part hits a glass it shatters instantly. Except laminated glass like windshield. Just my 2cent.
