Steering shakes violently by thebigfin

My name is John. I am leasing a cobalt for 36 mo. Thank God I am NOT buying it. I have been reading the postings. I had the problem with the key getting stuck in the ignition. They replaced the ignition but the problem persisted and they replaced the shifter assembly. 2 weeks ago the violent shaking of the steering column started. The power steering message came on but then it worked fine for the dealer. What a joke. They had it for 6 days and could NOT figure it out because the computer did not retain the error codes when I shut the car off! I reluctantly took the car back but after just 2 days, the EXACT same problem occurred! I had it towed a 2nd time! Today is now day 5 of this second round of visits! They have determined the problem is an electical short in the ignition but there is a national backorder on the part(s)! I was told it could take "1 - 2 weeks but it could take 3 - 4 days" What a joke! My dealer stinks! I will NEVER buy another Chevy! They gave me a loaner Impala with a steering column that does not sound too great. Gotta love it!

06 Cobalt Steering/suspension noise by

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt and I am hearing a "klunking" noise when I make right turns between 10-20 mph. GM has been contacted as the dealer can hear the klunk but cannot figure out how to fix it. Gm has advised my dealership that they are aware of the problem but do not know how to fix it. I have also been told by Gm that this is not a safety issue. A suspension problem not a safety issue???? I sure think it is. Has anyone out there experienced this problem and if so has it been fixed? Im out of hope for Gm. Next resort is trading it in for something more dependable.

I bought a 2006 Cobalt LS. During the first service with the dealers they changed a wheel because of defective quality. At about 2,000 km there were rattling noises when I applied the brakes approaching traffic lights and the car tended to pull to one side. I took it to the dealers and they replaced a brake rotor saying that it had worn out prematurely. The noise persisted so I took it back to the dealers again. Now they say that there was something wrong with the steering column and that GM was aware of it. They also said that GM is "updating" a certain part of the steering column and will let me know when the new part comes in. As the noise got louder, they told me to take the car in for inspection. I have taken the car in a few times and they said GM told them to check if there was any damage. Each time they said that the noise is not dangerous and asked me to continue driving until the new car part arrives. It has been over a year now and my car has done 37,500 km. I tell you the truth: there has not been a day when I am not worried when I or my family drive the car; and every km that I drive is a hugh frustration to me - how many people bought a new car and has to suffer with the annoyance for over a year? The dealers ( a very pleasant one) told me that they will get me in as soon as the part arrives and said that if the rattling gets worse, to bring the car in again.(a joke!) Theu never said when the part will be ready. The noises still appear whenever I approach a stop or when I drive over a gravel road or my unpaved driveway. So it is haunting me all the time. I will be a nervous wreck soon. Will GM buy the car back from me at a pro-rated discount since they cannot fix it or has not come up with a solution?

2000 Cavalier she bought with 24,000 miles on it as a "program car". It's clunked since day one under her ownership. Still does. I can't say that her car's clunk has the same source as your cars' clunks, but at 104,000 miles nothing's fallen off so I'm inclined to accept GM's premise that it's not a safety issue unless events prove otherwise. She's in the market for a new 2007 Cobalt LTZ with all the goodies. (NO more "program cars" - they've had the livin' snot run outa them!) For those Cobalt owners with the clunking, email a complaint to the NHTSA. While they won't launch a full-blown investigation on isolated complaints, if a sufficient number are posted, they will contact GM. Even GM won't unnecessarily take on the government these days - particularly with what may be a more consumer pro-active congress due for installation in January.

Reference your "klunking" noise on right turns. I had the same exact problems you are describing along with the same responses from gm and the dealership. Luckily I had a very experienced tech that I personally knew who would not give up on the problem. Believe it or not mine was caused from a faiulty control arm that looked and tested fine (so gm said). After replacing the control arms guess what???? no more noise. Demand they replace the control arms and I bet you have no further problems. Let me know what happens.hollow22aol.com

I feel so bad for you. I am in the exact situation as you are. Same exact noise. Gm now has that part your talking about. It is called an intermediate shaft that is part of the steering columb. I just got my cobalt into the dealer and they replaced it. Guess what???? it did not fix the noise. In fact it is worse. gm is a joke and I will never buy another gm product period. Good luck in getting you car fixed. Maybe we can go trade our cars in and get a good deal with a double sale!!!! (dont we wish)

Thank you for your information. I am going to the dealers tomorrow and speak to them about it. If by replacing the intermediate shaft it still does not do anything about the noise, GM is not doing a good job. It is a pity they don't take the concerns of customers seriously. The cobalt is not the first lemon I bought. I had a Citation before and it gave me a lot of frustration too. Now my grown-up children are not buying GM, my many friends are staying away from GM after talking to me about my "NEW" car - the Cobalt. No wonder GM is losing money and customers. I guarantee that my next three generations will not buy GM. I want to trade my Cobalt for another car, but not another GM. Actually, I just bought a Nissan as my second car. Thank you for your e-mail and nice to talk to someone who shares my same woe. I wish you the best in the future.

I went to but a car on a Sunday and the only dealership that was open was a Chevy Dealership. We (my wife and I) looked around for a little with a sales rep and we drove around in a couple of Cobalts. We baught one of them.
My first car was an '01 Corolla. I replaced the motor after 120 k miles and that has been the ONLY problem that I have ever had with that car. I baught the cobalt in December of '05 and have had 3 major issues with it. It just now passed 75 k miles.

Issue 1: I was driving my son around just to waste time and to settle him down because he had bad collic. All of a sudden my whole car starts jumping around like I had air shocks or something. The doors locked/unlocked, my rpm was jumping, all of my alerts were going off. I braught it in and they told me they had to replace the mainframe of the car computer.
Issue 2: I hit a pot hole when going around construction (my bad) and I thought I had a bad oil leak. That was not the case, afterall. The person that looked at the car said that my oil was not low and there was not a leak. The leak was coming from the middle of my engine somewhere.
They tore the engine apart and noticed that the part that was leaking wasn't known to go bad until after 100 k miles.
Issue 3: Now my car has power steering issues. Everytime I start it and drive a couple of miles the power steering alert shows up and I can barely turn the steering wheel. In Walker, Louisiana, where there is no where to turn unles you want to go into a ditch, at every stop sign/light I have to restart my car so I can turn into my driveway.
All I know is I will never own a chevy again.

Cobalt Steering - Loss of Control by mmh2

I got into an accident in my 2006 Cobalt this week and was wondering if anyone has heard of a problem like the one I had.

I was driving along a mostly straight road when the car veered slightly to the right. I steered to the left to correct it and completely lost control of the steering. I did not yank the wheel or anything, I was just driving normally.

I did some online searching and did not really find any reports of something like this. I did see that others had problems with the key getting stuck in the ignition, which happened to me a few times, but I am not sure if it could be related.

Another thing to note is that my engine and traction lights were on, and the car was brought in to the dealer several times but they could not find anything wrong.
