I never did find out. The transmission, coupled with the chrome peeling off the wheels, coupled with the fact that my paint started to flake off in basketball sized sheets made me decide to donate the car for auction. Good luck to you!

I need help i have a 99 buick regal gs and From a stop, the car trembled quite a bit (felt like the front tires were spinning). Once I got going, or if I eased into motion, the car would run fine. A bit later, I tried to drive it again and the car would not go into Drive, 3rd, or 2nd. Only low gear and reverse. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!

A girlfriend of mine has a 1996 Buick Regal. Engine size or anything else about the car I am not sure of. She called me tonight and said that she had had trouble with the car this morning. It was down to near zero this morning and when she started the car and took off, the engine would rev up but the car would only go at a slow speed. This continued until the engine had warmed up after she drove it for about 10 minutes and then the problem disappeared and the car and transmission worked in a normal mode. Is this a usual occurance with a 1996 Buick? Or is it an omen of bad things to come. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you get a response to your post regarding your girlfriend's 1996 Buick Regal transmission not shifting during cold start? I have a 1988 Buick Regal custom that I am refurbishing and the transmission is doing the same thing and it has a slow leak around the seal. Was she able to repair it without replacing or rebuilding the entire transmission? I am MBenson242aol.com

I know this is an old post, but did anyone ever find out what was causing this problem on their buick? I have a 2000 Regal with 75K miles on it, and it is experiencing the same issue. (studders/hesitates from a start) it only occurs with the car is hot and only before shifting into 2nd gear. Fluid and filter was changed about 3K miles ago.....Any info would be appreciated.

It's good to know this is still alive. No, my 88 buick is still standing still. I have not done anything else to it. The reason is I cannot find a mechanic that is willing to work on the car. The ones I have checked with wants too much money to do one or two things, or the mechanic won't show up at all. In this economy, everybody wants money. So, I have decided to put it on hold. Also, it seems your car stalls when hot, well my car stalls when cold (start-ups). I am no mechanic, but there might be a difference there. I hope you can find it. Keep me posted! GOOD LUCK

Hey there, sounds like you have the same problem that I have in my 1999 Regal LS.
My problem like yours started about or around 75,000 miles. The car will act like it is spinning or shudder really hard when you go to pull out in first gear but does not do it in any other gears. Mine only does it once in a blue moon and for no rhyme or reason.
I had a new filter and transmission fluid put in mine along with something called "Shutter Out" You can get it at Car Quest. I think that it was about 15 dollars for a tube of it. Anyway it really helped the problem but did not solve it.
Instead of having a really bad shutter it changed it to a slight slip instead.
I have been to a transmission shop and was told that I have a seal going bad and that it is causing the transmission to loose pressure. That in turn causes the clutches to slip instead of being held together. I was told 1000 for a rebuild.
I will drive my car till it stops and then get it fixed. . Hope that this helps..

This morning my buick started shifting out of third while on the highway. Later this afternoon we went out in it again to see what was going on and it just won't shift into 3rd. It revs high like as if it shifts into neutral. What are my options here? I live in Mexico and the mechanic, without looking at it yet, is saying that it's some kind of discs that are in the tranny??? Is this right? He is also quoting a pretty high price to fix it and I want to investigate before jumping in and letting him "work on it." Sometimes around here they just try to make a pretty penny off on someone and I wanna make sure it won't be me! lol.

We replaced the engine about 6 months ago. Tranny is original and has 155,000 miles on it. Fluid was a little low this morning when we checked it and we filled it up before going out again this afternoon. Thanks so much for any help ya'll can give me!!

First off I've had my buick for like 4 monthes, but I have blown two trannies in my time with gm trucks. The solenoid is completely blown and a rebuild will salvage the original tranny however it will be much cheaper to find a used tranny and have either you or someone else put the tranny in. It cost me six hundred dollars for the swap where a rebuild would cost a minimum of 1400. So I would start there or buy another car. The unfortunante thing is I believe I got about another five thousand miles on my tranny before my solenoid fails. Good luck
