I keep hearing good things about Garmin but there are too many to choose from. I may purchase one at Costco. I think that the nav. in the car would not give me everything I need. accuracy, detailed directions, very current directions and clear voice and screen. I think the voice activated one may be nice. what else is there to look for?

Costco is a good place to start because you can play with demo units.
 
Interface is important, so see if you like Tom Tom's or Garmin's better.

Detailed directions: Garmin > OEM, because it has text-to-speech and most OEMs don't or it's very limited.
 
Very current directions: Garmin > OEM, because they have quarterly updates, while OEMs often take a year, some times 2 years, between updates.
 
Clear voice: OEM > Garmin, no doubt, plus they lower the radio volume since it's integrated.
 
Screen: OEM > Garmin, due to size. However, consider how distant the screen is. A 5" portable up close with a vent mount may be more clear than a 7" screen way up on the dash.
 
That's how I see it.

I know this is an old post...but did you find a fix for this problem? I have the same problem.

Question for you - was it easier to install in your Subaru, or in the van? Just curious. We have a Sienna and a Forester.

I also had this issue come up, were you able to fix this Chinese characters issue? I was installing a latest nav DVD and in the override screen I accidentally selected Japanese nav and ended up in this mess. Please if you have sorted this out I would appreciate your response.

Hello folks,
 
I just tried upgrading Navigation DVD in my 04 Toyota Sienna, however in the override screen I accidentally pressed a wrong button which now shows Japanese or Chinese letter and gives me error message. How can I go back to this DVD units original state? I have read about removing the battery from the Nav DVD player's battery etc but does that work? Do anybody know the easiet fix for this? If any body out there can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
