#136 of 145 stalling and hesitation
Jun 30, 2013 (5:41 pm)
Hi, I have a 98 chevy venture 3.4L with 190,000 miles. The problem I am having is that when i make a left turn, the van acts like it wants to shut off, and while i am sitting at a stop sign it lurches sometimes and other times it don't do anything wrong. What is the problem. It starts just fine, i don't hear any noises. All the fluids are fine. Any advise would be helpful.

Hi - the best suggestion I found from someone here was that it was related to a wiring problem under the brake pedal. I have the same problem with my van - a 2003 Venture (no lurching though) - it just dies for no reason. I realized it was happening when stopped, when slowing or in the middle of a left turn. It doesn't happen often, but it is weird when it does. I'm waiting for an appointment to have it looked at but I suspect wiring is where the problem lies. Good luck with your van.

Hi, Thought I'd bring this here. My parents have a 2000 Chevy Venture with over 130k, that I also drive. Over the summer, an interesting starting issue began, and it doesn't happen very often. What happens is the car will start, idle very rough, then stall. It has happened after sitting 5 minutes, after sitting for 40, and it has happened after a 40 mile drive, and a 1-2 foot drive (literally). I believe its something in the fuel system (but I am not sure), and a lucky well timed slap of the gas gets the car to a normal idle, as well. Has anyone else had this issue?

Did you ever figure this issue out ? I have been having the same issue with my 2000 Chevy Venture (with the coolant light) and earlier today it died at a stop sign and now wont stay running...
I replaced my fuel pump , filter and relay about 3,000 miles ago and can hear the pump click on... So im hoping that really isnt the issue again.

I am dealing with the same issue. At first I thought it was an injector leaking down after shutoff but after further review, I discovered anti-freeze (very small amounts) in cylinder #1. There is a good chance it is a head gasket. This might sound a little crazy but when you first start it up stand at the back of the vehicle and smell the exhaust. If it is bruning anti-freeze it will have a sweet smell to it. You will not notice any loss in anti-freeze initially since the small leak will take time to notice and when you shut the vehicle off after running for some time the vehicle goes through "heatsoak". It actually heats up more, creates presure and as it cools it creates a vacuum which is how it pulls additional fluid from the resevoir tank. Problem is that if there is a small trace leak, this vacuum will never be created. You may want to have a mechanic you trust look at it before the engine gets damaged from the leak. Good luck.

my 2001 venture 3.4 after you drive it and then park for a few minutes it cranks and extra few cranks before it starts i have been told that it could be injector leak down causing a little flooding of cylinder, but it all ways starts, after it sit for along while it starts normally, it only does it after you run it and than shut it off for a short time and than try to start it, fuel pump has been replaced because gas gauge was acting up.

#144 of 145 Turnover but will not start
Jun 24, 2012 (7:57 am)
Just recently I got into my van and it turned on perfectly fine, I drove it for about 2 min when I had to stop and wait for traffic and it just turned itself off. I went and tried to turn it on but it will not, it turns over so I have battery but that's about it. I put oil, coolant, and gas into the car encase it was any of those issues, but it was not. I let it sit for 10 min and tried again and it started fine, drove it around the parking lot for a bit and then turned it off, went to turn it back on and it would not. It just turns over but doesn't actually start! Anyone have any suggestions?

It could be the fuel pump, and when you initially tried to restart it, was is accidentally in drive? The car will only start in Park or Neutral, I learned that the hard way. If the car is in Drive, Reverse or 1, 2, or 3, it will not even turn the engine. Back to your issue though, if it will turn but not start, it could be a few different things. Have you ever replace the fuel pump previously, because I suspect that the fuel pump could be bad, we had a similar issue where the van could not run without someone reving the engine. If you have the right gauges, you can test the fuel pressure. It might also be time to replace the spark plugs if they haven't been replaced, and check the air filter too.. A car needs three things to essentially run though, fuel, air, and spark, and without any one of those things, the car will not run well, if at all.
