Article comments for First Drive: 2007 Ford Expedition - Skyrocketing fuel costs have reduced the large SUV market from 1 million units in 2004 to an estimated 650,000 this year. Replying to: the_big_al (Jun 27, 2008 3:16 pm) well the only thing beside styling (which is subjective) that Tahoe and Suburban have over the Expedition is mileage. Tahoe gets 16/22, while the expy gets 15/20. Otherwise, Expy has - more standard features, - more optional features, - significantly lower price, - better towing, - useable and fold flat third row seats, - larger cargo space - more refined ride with IRS - better warranty I know many people cry over the not-so-new styling.. but the Expy is a great truck for those that actually need a big SUV .. and in its capabilities, it outdoes the 07 Tahoe. in 08 The tahoe is to get AFM and 6speed, that will likely further up the MPG, and might also get the hybrid. Ford has been mum about the ETA of Hydraulic hybrid and diesels on the F150/Esxpedition, but the expectation is that they will both come in 09 MY with the redesigned F150 - along with the new more powerful gas V8 engines. im confused people complain about mpg and $3 gas whenever they discuss full size suvs, but what about cars that are no where near there size and get about the same to worse gas mileage and are daily drivers or frequent drivers as well. the e550 gets worse gas mileage than a tahoe, so does the infiniti fx35/fx45, toureg, and the srx v8 also, along with the x5 v8, the turbo rdx suv gets 16 in the city the tahoe gets 17, how many midsive family, and luxury sedans get 17 23-28 epa ratings which are not that far off the tahoes but no one trashed those cars as beasts or monsters, not that drive one of these or would even want one just saying "logically" whats worse a 5 seater vehicle with space no where near an expedition and tahoe or a car that seats 7 or more has a v8, and can take off road, its a no brainer. every srt vehicle except the neon, crossfire and caliber have horrible gas mileage, as does the m5, m6 and all amg's except the c55, and what about the exotics why does the gallardo get 11mpg, or maseratis. lets be fair please........ Also, we have owned MANY suvs, Explorers, Expeditions, Yukon Denalis. We have also owned every pickup that these SUVs are based on and EVERY pickup got worse MPG than the SUV.

After long research for my next SUV I decided to stick with Ford and go with the 07 Expedition. The only thing that almost sold me on a 07 Tahoe was the exterior's front end headlamps-Land Rover look alike and the MPG. Expedition's interior takes the cake. I also like the center console shifter on the Expedition vs. the steering column one on the Tahoe, never a fan of steering column shifters. Overall the Expedition was well thought of. The third row seat on the GM models was a deal killer. Has anyone seen the 2007 Expy on the street yet? Does anyone have any idea when we can see these at the dealer? Ford Corporate told me to check with my local dealer. Local dealer told me to check with corporate. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Replying to: rsholland (Aug 14, 2006 8:16 am) Also, G.M.'s AFM system does not seem to be delivering the advertised performance or mileage. Just check the Tahoe message boards. Quite a bit of frustration over there. I think that Ford has a good solid offering in the large SUV catagory with the expedition.

The EL looks like it might be a possible replacement for our 04 Excursion Limited. Does anyone know if the 3rd row seat is shall we say "sittable" in the EL, I know the old Expedition had a 3rd row seat that was about an inch above the ground and not really suitable for hauling around 8 adults, if anyone knows please advise. FWIW, the Wall Street Journal compared the Expedition (EL I think) to the Suburban in Fridays edition and gave the edge to the Ford, primarily because of the ride quality and the smooth trans. On looks alone the Sub won out. Never thought I'd see the day a Ford truck rode better than a chevy...... Replying to: jesrf (Aug 28, 2006 8:08 pm) Even in pics, the 3rd row has more space than your typical Suburban (which we own), and I've sat in the 3rd row of a current gen regular Expedition, and thought it was equal to that in our larger Chevy, except for actually having more foot & leg room. Definately no worries about that, especially with the IRS and the fact that the current model's seat is already quite good. The extended EL just improves on that.
