What is this discussion about? Ford Expedition, SUV

Article comments for First Drive: 2007 Ford Expedition - Skyrocketing fuel costs have reduced the large SUV market from 1 million units in 2004 to an estimated 650,000 this year. Retaining market share in this climate means offering more and selling it for less. Ford, apparently, has figured this out. (more)

No, no Ford vehicle does yet from the factory, but according to one statement someone at Ford made, there should either be a dealer-installed version or some different aftermarket ones that can be done easily.

They're working on it, but it's not yet a regular feature for most of their vehicles.

That is true but there are more SUV's out there compared to the number of Gallardo's or AMG's. People are probably trying to help the majority first (SUV's) but ya once the SUV's begin to get better gas mileage they should def. consider fixin the cars with sucky mpg.

I just brought homean 07 EXP t show the wife. She si sick of the minivan thing and wants another vehicle. She likes it also and for waht you get for the price compared to others in this class, the Ford takes it hands down.

I am waiting for my dealre to find me one that has what I want.

Regarding the air suspension, is there really a difference. The new suspension on the 07 now is great. What will the air suspension bring to the table???

Air Suspension by mschmal

The biggest benefit of the Air Suspension is that it is auto leveling. This prevents the rear from "dragging" when you load up the truck. This is especially handy if you are towing.

The air suspension also "kneels" the truck when it is stopped which could help you get into it if the truck's height is a problem.

Ford always loved air suspensions so people who owned lots of big Fords look for this feature.

Good reviews by ckelly14

Initial reviews for the Expo look good. I'm wondering why the new Navigator is getting such poor reviews? Same car, more gadgets, different (and perhaps more offensive) sheet metal. Perhaps it's the competition? I'm looking for a large SUV, with all the gadgets, that can tow greater than 6000 lbs. Lack of fold flat seats is almost a deal breaker. That leaves the Durango/Aspen, Armada/QX56, Expedition/Navigator.

Funny you should mention gas mileage. One thing that I've noticed on every article I've read on actual mileage experienced when testing Ford trucks and GM trucks: GM's mileage is always either on the city end of the estimate or lower in mixed driving and Ford's is usually in the middle or near the highway end in mixed driving.

I owned a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer and a 2004 Chevy Tahoe. Unless I drove like my grandmother in a heavy fog during a monsoon (not exaggerating), I never got EPA Both vehicles got 14 mpg in mixed driving, and 55% of my driving was highway.

I borrowed my friends 2006 F150 while he learned to drive a stick in my 2003 Saturn Vue. I got 18 in mixed driving. But then again, I get 25 to 26 in mixed drivig in my Vue and he only got 22. He also agreed to replace my clutch. Something about revving the engine and riding the clutch, but I digress.

If you are purchasing or thinking about purchasing one of these vehicles, and doing so for the right reasons, MPG should be the least of your worries. Horsepower should be a concern either. Now torque...I agree that that should be the main concern for anyone considering either the Expy or the GM Tahoe clones. Pulling that camper or boat and not needing a tow truck on the other hand should be at the top of your list. If you aren't buying for the 'right' reasons (read as vanity or show), both companies sell really nice minivans that get excellent gas mileage for the same people hauling capacities.

But don't take my word for that, check out the recent magazines and web comparisons and do the research yourself.

That was a nice article. Would have loved to see that as Suburban vs. EL though. Perhaps then the non-flat-folding GM third row wouldn't have mattered so much, since there's a ton of room even with seats up.

Also, the complaints about the Chevy's small wheels and squishy tires were unfounded, as 20"s are available on the GMs as well as the Ford. And of course the autoride suspension on the Chevy would have, um, levelled the field.. Granted, those would have made the price difference even wider, another $3,000 in the Ford's favor. Just saying, it wasn't quite apples to apples.

Overall, I agree with the conclusion. I currently have a GMC, but I'll bet my next vehicle is an Expy EL because of the 6-speed, IRS, flat folding third row, and better value for the money. Also just prefer the Ford styling, inside and out. Unless the ginormous rebates come back and I get some GM loyalty deal, I'd take either one, it'll come down to price. I think they're both nice, but I lean towards the Ford at this point.
