#540 of 758 Finally got my BMW 328Xi! by bmw_gss

Hi all,

I finally got my dream car - 2010 328Xi. Its a loaner with 6K miles and 3.5 yrs on warranty - black on black with premium package, value package, heated seats, heated steering. Got it out the door for 36K, pretty much the best deal I could get after shopping at 4 dealers for similar cars.

I noticed that the remote key does not come with the usual 'chirp/beep' sound when I lock or unlock the car. I find it odd that such a thing is not on a BMW!! Is there some setting I should turn on/off or is that something the dealer needs to program - how much does that cost?

Before I forget, greatly appreciate all the advise and help from folks on this wonderful forum, that helped get my car!! Thank you all!

first of all, Congratulations on your 3 series! You're going to love it for years and years to come.

The 328i remote just locks and unlocks the doors while flashing the parking lights. It doesn't beep because there is NO ALARM. The 335i comes standard with an alarm.

Don't worry though, you won't need it.

Unless they changed things after 2007, the 335 does not come with an alarm. It is wired for an alarm, but does not come with one.

I miss the chirps - used it a lot with prior cars when I could not remember where I parked, so I'm thinking of getting one installed for that.

I just bought a bronze '07 328 wagon with beige interior. First, on interior, mine has 45k miles and the leather still looks very good. This leather is pretty tough - unlike the soft, supple stuff I had in my A4. But the carpets are pretty dirty - of course, you can cover them up with mats. I too have put down rubber mats. But I live in SoCal, so the black interior, while showing less dirt, is just too hot.

I assume you have premium package, which has the power seats; for me, this is option is indispensable. BMW manual seats seem very limited in adjustments and don't have any lumbar. I have a buncha other options but not Nav. The best two are Xenon/adaptive headlights and the Logic 7 premium stereo. I don't know if you can add the xenon lights but certainly you should be able to upgrade the stereo. The rest of the options are nice but kinda just bling: keyless, seat warmers, back up beeper, In fact, the back up beeper is annoying.

BTW, great car - a blast to drive and plenty of room for bikes in the back.

Did you get the alarm installed at the dealer - how much did it cost?

#545 of 758 How do I turn on retractable headlight washer by bmw_gss

Sep 03, 2010 (4:44 pm)

I am first time bmw owner and still trying to figure out/get familiar with all the options on it. How do I turn on the retractable headlight washer on my 328 Xi?
What exactly is a run flat tire and I am surprised the car does not come with a spare tire?

No offense intended, but have you tried looking for the answers in your Owners Manual? If you don't have a manual they can be downloaded from the BMW NA website.

Disclaimer...I don't own a bmw...but I believe the headlight washers are like others.

When your lights are on, and you're spraying your windshield, they'll also come on.

No spare tires with run-flats--i believe the 3 series started using these in about 06.

You can drive on your run-flats...even with a big hole in them; there was a commercial with a guy taking a drill to one showing how they work i.e. they don't deflate...kinda neat. You don't have to sit on the side of the road changing a flat in a rain storm (been there...)

The replacement costs are higher...but you don't have to carry a spare tire around with you all the time...some other CONS as well with comfort, but if you purchased the vehicle it probably didn't bother you.

#548 of 758 Automatic Door Locks? by bmw_gss

Sep 05, 2010 (7:06 pm)

After ignition and putting the car into drive, the 328Xi does not seem to auto lock as I accelerate. Thats such a basic feature and even my wife's civic has that. I am amazed that its not in a bimmer? I hope even this is not linked to the anti theft alarm system, which I dont have. I read the manual and could not find anything abt it. Any thoughts other 328 XI owners? Please advise.

I have to hit the small all lock button on the dashboard to lock the doors.

The Auto Lock feature is a programmable feature (your dealer can toggle it on and off). Why isn't it by default on? Because some of us (me included) absolutely hate having our doors lock automatically and when we drive cars that do that it drives us nuts.
