Yes the Fit may have more over all interior room... but unless you plan driving it with the seats down all the time, it doesnt really matter.
Actually, I was talking about large amount of space behind the rear seats. And I get 39-40mpg hwy in my Fit and it's a blast to drive too.

well if its underpowered it has more work to due, resulting in worse mileage. Besides the r series in the civic is brand new and engineered to be economical, the fits l series is a much older engine. Agreed about the space though. As much as i like the fit, the rabbit has a sense of solidity on the road that cant be beat.

Yes and those are epa numbers. There are a lot of people getting bad mileage with the fit, well, no i take that back. Not bad mileage but a lot less than what the epa claims. Edmunds long term fleet has a fit that isn't getting great mileage either.(at least when compared to what they are supposed to get.) Whereas many rabbit owners are getting much closer to those numbers on a much more frequent basis. averaging 28 mpg isn't bad in my book. But thats all irrelevant if you have what YOU get in YOUR fit in mind.
Reliabilty? Yeah honda is great, i'm a big fan but i took a plunge with the rabbit and its been doing great. Vw has had a big turnaround. As far as quality goes, you don't have to be reliable to have a good quality exterior or interior. And i must say, even being a honda fan, that the interior of the rabbit does have the fit beat. The fit is nice, but the rabbit does come out on top.

In the Edmunds First Drive roat test, they averaged 19mpg for the Rabbit, versus 32mg for the Fit in Edmunds observed MPG in their road test, both in the first drive test and long term for the Fit. From what I've read on both the Rabbit and Fit forums, the Rabbit can get in the high 20s with mostly highway driving and the Fit gets in the high 30s with mostly highway driving.
The Edmunds First Drive test of the Rabbit show it to run $20K, which is about $4000 more than my Fit, so I hope you get some upgrades for the $4K. For me, the added luxury features aren't woth the $4K, especially if I get better MPG and have more space in the Fit, as well as the more versatile interior.

I test drove a 2006 (the 07s are not available yet) Mini Cooper and the 2007 Rabbit.
To me they are comparable cars.
Same price range, same general features.

If you want to play it that way, yes the 20k price tag comes with a fairly loaded four door rabbit. My 2 door rabbit barely cost 17k, which is not that much more than a fit sport and it offers more features. (albeit not things that are neccessary but more than justify the couple hundred more.) The fit, as nice as it is and as much as i really do still like it and find myself looking at them when passing through honda dealers, still feels a cut below the rabbit. The rabbit has such a rock solid feeling and amazing build quality that its such a good amount of car for the price. The fit is outstanding in this area as well, but after having test drove both, i realize that the fit, while peppy and giving better mileage, simply does not feel as solid. (thats weight and physics mind you, not really an opinion.) The fit is very nimble, but its certainly not as quick as the rabbit nor does it have the same gusto of the line. Fuel ecomoy? Yeah it stinks sometimes, especially after coming off of an 06 civic. But the tank is considerably larger so i can get pretty far, i have never averaged below 27 mpg (mixed about 50/50) and the fact that this is the only car in my household that me and my wife use, makes it not that big of a deal. In fact, this car gets better mileage than her 03 mazda protege 5 did. As far as space goes, i think that it only applies to the fit's hatch, the interior of it may only seem roomier because of how tall it is and how airy it feels. So the 4k is not really a big deal, if you get the right rabbit. I like 4 doors, but i didn't need them and even so i was hard pressed to find a fit that didn't near the 20k mark anyway because of all the dealer markup where i live.
But hey bob i'm glad the fit fits for you so i'll just hop along.

Hmm...what does this all mean? Hey you know how i show it when i think a car is lame? By not posting in a forum that is about them, thanks.
Repairs? Haven't had any. And if i need them, i have 50k more miles to go.

It's good as a 2dr, but pretty tough putting a kid in a car seat.

i've thought of that and i've actually have had my little car seat occuping brothers in the back when the come to visit me and my wife and it wasn't too bad...but it would get old after awhile. I think that for kids four doors are a so much better.
